If you can find an old MG Metro in a scrap yard then get the dizzy and ignition amp box off that. An alternative is to get a rebuild 24D4 dizzy unit for the same car out of a 'classic car' magazine.

IME the Maplin kits are not really upto off road use and are built to a price.

It is also possible to run a 2.25 petrol off a MegaJolt kit (Google for it) and use a Ford EDIS ignition pack (on original shape Mondeos). This will require a trigger wheel and you will end up 'distributor less'.....which is a hell of a lot more reliable. :)

You need the 'lumenition' kit. It's the best on the market, is easy to fit and works a treat.

Find their website, and it tells you which model you'll need for an S3.

Cost is quite high, but you get everything you need.

I did it to my S3 last year in about 3 hours and it hasn't missed a beat since.

Refering to andys suggestion, you can make a trigger wheel from the same ford, as far as I can remember the timing pulley on the ford is 36 teeth, so one of these with one of the teeth filed or milled off gets you your encoder wheel, the ford original pickup comes off the flywheel, but as long as the pulley trigger wheel is steel or cast you can make a bracket for the pickup and use it that way, you just might need an adaptor ro fit the wheel to the end of the crank.
There are different versions of edis, but they are all reliable, I think its just the interface protocol that talks to the eec injector controller module that varies, edis modules will work stand alone without the eec connected, you would of course be runing with the edis escort or mondy ignition advance profile, it'll still work though.

Lumenition is not cheap, but its easy to fit, works a treat and is very reliable,my IIA has it and I've just fitted it to a customers.(Cant get decent points/condensors now)
Plus, you can take it off when you are done with it,stick it on the shelf till you want to use it on something else - mine came off a scrapped V8,only had to buy the 4cyl fitting kit.
