S111 Gearbox indent springs

Possibly the most annoying trait of these gearboxes is the indent springs on 3/4 synchro that break in half and can then be found in sump when the gear oil is drained. I recently fitted a replacement albeit second hand untested gearbox during August and have been singing its praises until this Tuesday that is when suddenly without warning the third gear refused to engage and eventually the gear stick got stuck in fourth after I lost patience with it. Removing the floor plates, turrett and top gearbox cover revealed two completly broke indent springs with the third bent beyond recognition and jammed in the synchro.The gear shift now works ok but I am expecting other problems will now exist with changing gear

Is it possible to replace these springs without removing the gear box ?

Thanks for that extremely helpful hand out, exactly what I wanted, Now that I know it is possible I will obtain new springs. The box has only been fitted two months although I bought it a while ago from Steve Graham before he closed his yard. the box is ex military s111 with a what appears to be a high ratio transfer box and is in very good condition. I have today reassembled the top of the gearbox dropped the floor plates in position and took it on a test run. all gears now back working got the odd crunch from 4th to 3rd but will have to do until the springs arrive

This is very fiddly but can be done. It is easy to drop the springs into the gearbox whilst doing it so order some extras, they are only pennies, so you don't have to keep getting out and pulling them out the bottom. I would advise bent long nosed pliers and several small screwdrivers to manoevre the springs about. The last one (3rd) will be the hardest, but whatever happens don't be tempted to force it in as they can bend and get stuck and subsequently be impossible to remove. lots of patience needed.;)

Got the springs from Phil at Dunsford.After 2 hours of fidding inside the top of the gearbox with long nose pliers and surgical forcepts and torch I gave up. gearbox out! stripped the bell housing off and removed the synchro. even in hand it was tricky to fit them springs. all back in 2 hours. however as it getting warmer and brighter I am now fitting a replacement footwell and bottom near side leg repair which is long over due however I need a side channel for the left hand side which is a bit corroded and worse for wear

Has any member got one for a Series 111 88"
