Yes, that's exactly how I'd expect modern car gauges to behave. They are a glorified traffic light systems not proper gauges. Given you went to a pre-defined 3/4 temp zone once you were over the "normal" range and LR were Ford owned - perhaps the L322 is running my temp gauge driver program code?

As BMW did the default "within range" fixed centre needle position for the coolant gauge trick first - I'm not surprised!Ford owned but BMW Designed and Electronic-ary

Just been driving a new ,hired Ford Fiesta,does'nt even have a temp gauge.I presume it has a red warning light for over temp but as there was no handbook,I didnt look any further!

Girlfriends Beetle was the same - blue light when cold, off when normal and Red when too hot....
