As some of you may be aware, ive worked in motorsport for many years - and I run my freelander on chip oil!!
Driving down M65, 100mph @ 1.5 bar boost, mucho smoko, pulled over, switch off and........nothing happens, engine on full bore..engage clutch and force stall. Sump oil level critically low - oil has been sucked past bearings in turbo and is running engine!! How much smoke ! New turbo ordered, but be aware, it can and does happen!!!!

First off if you've been in motorsport for years why are you driving a diesel hippo at speeds it was never meant to? and secondly for the sump oil level to be critically low it must have been very low before you set off.

way to go with the sympathy there Jerry!!!

sump oil must have been critically low???? how??? Do you check your sump oil before you set off on every journey?? Off course you do!!

Says 104mph there

Thanks for the 'heads up' Nije - hope you get it sorted soon

I would have thought if the oil was that low the oil pressure light would have came on. Strange !!

The TD4 has a max engine speed of 6750 rpm. That is very high for a diesel isn't it?

that 104mph is max speed not max sustained speed. so you'd be revving the bollocks off in 4th gear to be doing 104mph , not the best why to get the best from yer engine. going by the data on that web page it don't got the grunt to get to max revs in top gear. doing so in 4th is just plain bonkers.as for 1.5bars boost thats just asking fer trouble.

what was you doing in motorsports? selling hotdogs at castle combe?

Dose considering it redlines at 4500 and the rev counter only shows 6K Full scale

Hard luck nije, Hope its not going to be an expensive fix. yer loone!

From memory I think my V6 red lined at 6000rpm, scale went to 7000ish.

Hello Mondo :D How you doin?

Christ on a bike ! How many of you know anything about turbocharged engines? First off there was plenty of oil in it - thank god i do check it regulary! And as for 100 mph being fast...that was an indicated 100, probably 85 in reality! The L series engine is very tunable and the internals will easily acomodate an extra 40 bhp, which by the way is easily extracted. Whats the point in engine tuning if you wurry about blowing it up - it goes wrong, I mend it - very simple. There are 1001 perple who will tell you not to run on chip fat as it causes damage - how many of them have tried, tested and succeeded ? Put your money where your mouth is I say! I thought sharing some of these experiences might be both humerous and helpfull - maybe I shouldnt bother in future.

Nd while im on a roll....I agree that 1.5 bar might be a tad high, but it should run @ 1.2 all day so its not that much of a hike.

Errr, that tells me NO engine oil. Correct me if I'm wrong but the sump is where the engine oil sits.
Sump oil level low = low pressure = not enough engine oil.

I wouldn't say we're having a dig, more of a prod with a stick.

No,NO,No yer clown!
I think wot nije is saying is,That, because the turbo seals had gone, from the time it took him to notice the smoke, to slow down from a ton/85,stop stall motor, that the thing had drank about 5 litres of engin oil,:D

And yep I agree wi yer nije! your motor, you bust it, you fix it, nowt to do with anyone else,
Just saying! hope its not too costly,
No need to chow me head off:D

Losing 5 litres of engine oil that fast has got to hurt. Sorry Nije, take it all back. Like Mondo says I'm a clown.
Lets hope it's an easy and cheap fix, I doubt it but lets hope ;)

5 litres isn't that about a gallon? so what do you get to the gallon?100yds?20yds?
maybe you need to put a 'T' and the end of yer name.
otherwise i agree with grunt

Yer not a clown mark:p yer right !
Dont fergit ,on top of the oil ,theres the chip fat its burning aswell:eek:

The Disco used to go thro 2 liters evrey 2 days with a shagged head gasket and that was about 140 m a day

So Slob might be right and Grunts just showing off;)

but what do we know:rolleyes:

I 've seen the results of a TD5 Disco having done the same, it ran on its on engine oil without the keys in, the head partially came off amongst other parts and made a right mess of the bonnet, LR paid out the full new RRP price for the 6 month old Disco, the guy in question then bought an M class Merc.

He had owned it from new and it had 6k on the clock, this all happened on the M56 hard shoulder, with him and a Policeman 100 yds up the road as it revved its own t#ts off until it went bang.

There is a note in the hand book which states"CHECK THE ENGINE OIL MORE FREQUENTLY IF THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AT HIGH SPEEDS FOR PROLONGED PERIODS" basic common sense stuff. FFS if you need to tune an engine stick to petrol. Now that Audi have won Le Mans in a diesel the country will be littered with smouldering f....d up diesels.
