i have a 1987 classic 3.5 V8 EFI Manual. I bought it in november and have covered about 6000 miles in it. I recently overheated and found that the radiator was clogged up with mud that i stupidly had not cleaned off. The engine always ran hot anyway before this up at the far end of the white line just before the going into the red. I have replaced a couple of hoses that were old and fitted an 82 degree thermostat, and new viscous drive to the fan but i am still running hot but not overheating. I loose no oil or water and it is not mixing, i have no bubbles in the expansion tank but the top hose does get quite firm. She runs lovely apart from this and i am not convinced the head gasket has gone. Anyone got any ideas?

Might want to try postin' this in the Range Rover section, maybe some one can help ye there;)

Id tend to agree with RAZ8550TDI run the engine to normal operating temp and then feel the rad, make sure the rad is the same temp all over, and not cold in certain places, make sure the cooling fins on the rad are in good condition for example not bent or missing.

Try disconnecting the top and bottom hoses and flush the rad through, chances are the rad is blocked.

Another thing it could be seeing the engine doesn't boil over, might sound stupid but the temp sender unit could be faulty and displays the wrong temp on the guage.

Firm hose could mean being pumped up with some steam.

Air locks and blocked radiator are the duel causes.

Both issues are addressed here for the Rover SD1 V8.

Try applying the solutions to your arrangement.

If these are not the probs then undercooling may be due to viscous fan failure as explained here:

If the radiator has been in for more than 6 years it will more than likely be choked inside with deposits from the engine - I am told you need to flush and change coolant every couple of years.
I recently had a radiator re cored. The company carrying out the work showed me the old core when I went to collect. If I was lucky coolant was circulating through around 1/3 of the old matrix.
Recoring cost - £180 - £200.
