rumble from below!

I'll be be doing the pin pointing this afternoon when my son gets back from school. The converter has not failed at this point, just sounds like it is complaining..
This was the idea of asking for pointers.
I have recently been over the mountings and prop shafts after doing a routine check and grease up under the bus. She is in all honesty quite a good solid car underneath. Hence the reason I jumped at the chance to buy it.

if it was drive line issue it would be related to road speed (not RPM related ) bit like an in balanced wheel /tyre ..but this would not indicate to a rumble after the shut down because the driveshaft doesn't move after shut down

no need for an engine crane lift unless your deciding
I have a ramp In my garage, I did a Nissan terrano clutch (swearing) last week. That is one reason why I'm not jumping at the chance to do it!!!! Arrrgh...

Running away!!!

if you need an old d21 terrano fuel pump I have one here

with the terrano you needed to drop the front torsion bar suspension to remove the box

since the landrover doesn't use torsion bar suspension you wont need to worry about the extra work involved

Ok guys, the results are in.
After listening carefully to the gearbox at various engine speeds, we have a noisy oil pump at the converter end,
A mild droning noise from the gearbox core and yes it is indeed the converter rumbling on shut down, even at idle (at a lower volume).
Diagnoses based on mileage and age.
Worn box!

Start saving your money then, dont know how much a rebuild is in your part of the world but over here two arms and at least one leg!

I know, its an expensive do', but this one lasted 189,000mls... so I'm going to rebuild it myself. the average price here is around 1600-2000€!!! holy bat turds!

I guess she be off the road for while..
Booloocks
I haven't yet rebuilt a tranny off a land rover yet but all the transmissions I have rebuilt have come off A40 d dump trucks and other big toys .they all seems to work on the same principle .the oil pump is normally located behind the bell housing on the tranny (so transmission out bell housing off simple )

I have never heard a oil pump rumble before but there is allways a first ..normally the transmissions I work on have test ports to plug in a pressure gauge
maybe the oil pump may have wear and cavitation... more than likely the transmission bearings have been oil starved

unless your doing a full transmission rebuild then yes it going to expensive and time consuming

just a question has this vehicle been towed at any point for a long period ?

Its the converter rumbling, the oil pump is making a light crickling noise.. If you can imagine that?
Never towed as long as I've owned it and not before in my friends hands.

so it was the convertor

the oil pump is a gear pump not a vein pump ..there might be some wear in the oil pump making the teeth chatter as if it was out of tolerance ..is there much metal swarf on the sump magnet ?
you could tear down the oil pump and check tolerances and inspect oil pump housing for serious wear
the correct way would be to test pressures but I'm unsure how to do this on a ZF transmission

some transmissions allow to test via a diagnostic tool

the transmission I work on have test ports

So does the ZF.
