I have a 1972 rangerover hybrid (RR classic with defender body and canvas back) which currently has the fuel tank and filler in the back of the cab behind the driver and passenger seats.

Does anyone know if this is ok? I am fine with it but I am sure that Sainsburys turned the pump off on me the other day when I was leaning in to fill it up! I didn't say anything as at the time I assumed it was full and they didnt say anything to me but on looking inside it later that day I noticed it wasnt quite full.

It has passed an MOT etc so I would assume it was fine although I could see why some people might be funny about it. The only other ones I have seen with tanks located where mine is were pickups and the tank was outside the cab.

Many thanks

Sainsburys might have been more worried that you were going to do a drive-off. I've seen cars with a stack of jerry cans or even an old oil drum in place of the back seat. They work on the basis that if they're going to commit the crime they might as well get a decent amount of fuel.

The same sort of thing is used by toe-rags who nick diesel out of parked up lorry tanks at night.

welcome to the site.......oh my mistake you hadnt introduced yourself.

theres no regs on the location of a fuel tank as such, but i would assume similar to above, filling up cans/tanks etc to do a runner, i had the pump turned off on me once as my front plate had come off whilst playing.

thanks for your replies, I am used to upsetting people - normally when i drive past their houses at night!!

Some early land rovers had the petrol tank under the drivers seat with the filler cap inside.
