Hi everyone

I am having a lot of fun since I bought my RRC diesel a few months ago (and a lot of headaches too) and thanks to everyone here for their help answering my previous questions.

I have known since I bought it that I would need some new tyres so I have today purchased some BFG M/T KM2 on modular wheels 235/70R16

I bought these partly because I want to do some pay and play days - I have never done these before - from research I have done I need 2 jate rings (where do I fit these on RRC?) and a tow rope incase I get stuck. Can somebody recommend a good tow rope to buy? Any other advice for a first time offroader gratefully received :)

Also can anyone recommend a tubular front bumper design and something similar for the rear? I don't necessarily want to fit a winch - just want to improve the looks. I am after something similar to the one on bottom page 15 Feb 2012 LRO mag.

Cheers all
Will

Hi Will.
Whereabouts are you in the world?
You'd probably be better off posting this on the 'off road' section. This kinda stuff gets lost in the Range Rover section, under all the P38 n L322 related stuff

Yeah, you'll need good strong recovery points. Loads of tubular bumpers available for the RRC's...ebay is a good place to browse

There's also some choices you need to make if ya thinking of buying a recovery rope.

Might be an idea to use the 'search' function on this forum.......there's always a lot of stuff on these topics. ;)

Hi Will, glad you are enjoying your RRC! Depending how far you want to go offroad depends how you kit it out.

For instance, mine is used regularly onroad but I wanted something that would be capable greenlaning, can run most red routes on a pay & play day and will also cope with overlanding/expedition work. So, I fitted some fairly chunky Insa Turbo Traction Track A/T tyres in a 235/70/16 fitment.

First thing you want protection wise is to fit diff guards front and rear - the diff cases are stupidly thin and far too easy to crack on a rock, which would be a real PITA. You may then also want to consider steering guards or heavy duty steering arms; I have got a HD track rod (the bit the steering damper mounts to) and will be getting a steering guard to protect the bars at the front. Going further, you could then think about tree/rock sliders, fuel tank guard, brush guards for your lights....etc etc!

As for recovery points, you can mount a pair of JATE rings on the front chassis rails (see my pic below of JATE ring and diff guard in place). I wanted to keep my car as standard looking as possible from the outside, so cut two holes on the front valance to thread a tow strop through, the tow rope would then attach to this, spreading the load between the two JATE rings/chassis legs. I have the advantage of my car being on EAS (air suspension), so ground clearance for the front splitter is not really an issue for me, but sounds like you will be removing yours anyway for a tubular bumper. If you front splitter in perfect condition? If so I could be interested in it - PM me!

As for the rear end, if you have a towbar that would be fine for light recovery work, although I guess another pair of JATE rings on the chassis rails would be preferable.

Might be worth having a look at my thread about my car for a few more pics/details: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/m...pedition-project-ongoing-pics-etc-164020.html

Good luck!

Thanks very much for the info and pictures Mike.

The front splitter on my classic is in good condition and if I decide to go to a tubular bumper design I will certainly give you first refusal on it.

I do have a towbar on the rear end - but I think I will get another pair of jate rings to go on the back.

I have been in the pit for a large part of today removing the sump and resealing it with RTV sealant. I don't know who bodged it previously but it looks like they used bathroom sealant - I pulled it off in big strips  With the rocker cover gasket and half moons done and now the sump that's at least two of my oil leaks stopped !

Thanks again
Will

If you put JATE rings on the back I'd remove the tow bar and bracket, offroad it basically acts as a plough and at some point will likely get you stuck! I keep mine on as I do tow with the car, use it as a rear recovery point and don't go too extreme, but it would get my stuck on some bomb holes if I tried them.

Let me know about that splitter!

Oh, and re: oil leaks - you know what they say, if a Land Rover isn't leaking oil it's because it hasn't got any in it!
