Hey guys,

My Dad just bought a RRC and has a couple of niggling little problems:

1. All of the lecky windows work except for the driver one (which is a hassle if going off-road!). There appears to be five wires going into every other switch but only three to the drivers switch? Can anyone help?

2. None of the heater controls do anything. They do not backlight with the rest of the interior lights, and the blowers do not work. Could this just be a fuse?

Thanks for any help,

Alec.

have you checked relays for heater and are you getting power to the window

Not checked relays for heater yet (will worry about that more in the winter!)

Right now the driver's window is kind of the priority. It doesn't appear to be getting any power - can't hear a motor trying or anything...

what year is your dads classic? it may have a blown window ecu, which is found under the centre cubby box.

It's a 1991 H reg. How can we access the ECU, and can it be repaired/soldered?

Cheers,

Alec.

I'd have that checked. Mine went and was extremely easy, and cheap to replace, but is a common problem from what I've heard.

It looks like a little black box inside the centre console. You can take the black console tray out by a few screws if I recall correctly. If the board looks fried, there's your problem, and I wouldn't suggest soldering. Just have it replaced, less issues. ;)

normally find them on ebay as well, also make sure the switch working, swap it with the passenger one.
as for the heater control lights, they have very small bulbs in the facia, just unscrew the 2 phillips headed screws and make sure the wire has not broken, and check your bulbs

The switch is definitely working - tried swapping it with the passenger one and no difference. We took apart the cubby box thing and found the ECU...

You might have to forgive my total lack of auto electrical knowledge here - but does the ECU only control the driver side switch? The box was marked something like "one touch lift unit" (or something - I'm not with the car just now), which implied "one touch" window operation - but none of the windows operate with a one touch system.

Also, when the ECU was removed, the other three windows still functioned as normal. The ECU didn't appear visibly damaged but I wouldn't really know what to look for.

Whilst it was plugged in, when we tried using the driver window switch the two brass-like coils with "hammers" against them would click, but this would not happen when we tried moving any of the other windows.

Does this suggest that the ECU and switch are working and that the motor may be at fault?

Sorry if this sounds vague (had a few beers). It's driving my Dad nuts so any help would be greatly appreciated! (Don't really want to shell out for ECU if it's not broken!)

Cheers,

Alec.

that ecu is the one we are referring too yes, it only serves the drivers window on your year of car, on the later 92 models it does both front windows, it sounds to me that you need to replace that ecu.

Thanks for the info.

But the ECU seems to be doing whatever it's meant to do - the hammers against the coils click when the switch is pressed up and down. Does this mean the fault could be with the motor? And if so, how do we go about accessing the motor to check it?

Cheers,

Alec.

Don't bother getting into checking the motor. You can get a replacement for £15.00 (e-bay). It isn't worth messing about with. Apart ffrom that, the motor might be fine and it is the gear on the bottom of the motor that is the problem. If this jams up it is a bit of a pain to take the casing apart, clean it all up and re-assemble. Really, just get a secondhand motor, bang it in there and all shouldbe well unless there is a problem with the regulator but I would have thought that unlikely.

OK, thanks guys. I guess it's bound to be the motor or the ECU so we'll start by testing the motor and then replacing that if it's fecked, then the ECU...

Thanks for all the help,

Alec.

(I'll let you know how we get on :))
