Hi there.

Quick question out of curiosity really;

The transfer box on my road Range Rover auto whines slightly. When i lift off the throttle after giving it some power, I can hear a faint 'click' type sound.
I'm assuming its the transfer box, as if I grab and hold, or even just rest my hand on the hi-lo selector gear lever when travelling, the noise goes.

These transfer boxes are chain driven, right??

I'm assuming the noise might be the chain, with a bit of backlash causing the noise when I lift off the power??

I've changed the oil in there. It has EP90 in. It's made this noise since I've had it. I only ask as the RRC 89 reg bobtail has the same box but doesnt have the noise. I did even think it could be the wooden gear knob trasferring noise different to the bobtailed std vinyl covered plastic one.

Thoughts anyone????:confused:

just ignore it joe, another noise will come along to replace it even if you fix it, just run it till it breaks so long as it has oil in it :D

they are supposed to run on atf they have oil pump inside they do have chain ,lever is connected to epicylic they can become loose and move probably causing your whine

Thanks chaps.

Have often wondered about that one...some of my references say Gear oil, some say ATF....

The stuff that came out was gear oil, hence why I replaced it with fresh of the same. Stuff in the bobtail is also gear oil...hmm?
Should I be using ATF instead??? not sure:confused:

all borg warners run on atf if you own a rr you should know that the lt230 that used to be used run on ep909

Thanks. You prompted me to do some more searching. Both mine are post 89 with auto locking transfer boxes, not manual locking ones, which is where I was getting confused (and I'm guessing so did both previous owners of my two RRCs! :doh:).....just confirmed here;
Range Rover Transfer Case Oil Change

Cheers, will be doin the changes asap

I had mine done at a garage cos I couldnt be arsed, I hope its got the right stuf in- it was a landy garage but the guy was a tool.

Im glad the 72 runs 20/50 :D

why borg warner locked all the time but with abiloity to have lock and turn corner with both axles having positive drive,plus bb last longer than lt230

wrong fluid in transfer may have been why its not been happening for me whilst off roading!:doh:
...Well, I know what I'm doin tommorrow on the motors! :)
