Oh rite thought it was the owner
Unfortunately not. Hence my plate is named " the gift that keeps on costing". I was bought it as a Christmas present almost two decades ago by the ex. The ex is gone and no longer costs me anything. The plate costs me, every time I change vehicles ;)

From what I can tell the plate belongs to me providing I take it off the car before I sell it but if I sell the car with the plate it becomes his. Problem is I/we can't re tax the cars until we both get our new V5's.
If we both put the orignal numbers back the same thing applies and we would need to wait for the new V5's before swapping cars. My thinking is if we swap cars his plate becomes mine and mine becomes his, we then give each other our plates back which can be done online and assign the numbers to our cars. o_O

Read the .gov a little more carefully. It is not that simple.

I didn't think it would be :) I will give the dvla a ring tomorrow and see if it's possible. Got to get some sleep now so good night all and thanks for the comments.

It can all be done on line, you both put your reg on retention get old number back new v5 then swop cars and transfer your number to new car, been there done that its the only and proper way to do it, the way you are thinking is a right fav.

@kds I don't realy want to wait a couple of weeks for my shiney new"ish" Rangy:).
Spoke to the DVLA and all we have to do is sell the plate with the car and when the new V5's come we just put them on retention and give them back to each other. Simples.

Did DVLA also tell you that the simple job of transferring them to each other will mean both go through a period of not being assigned to a vehicle? You will have to wait for the transfer to go through. So no driving your shiny newish Range Rover.
Took them 10 days to transfer mine last time and now they say it takes even longer. Really simples.

I said in my previous post but will try again. You need to read the .gov guidelines really carefully. Whichever way you do this, it is not simple.

If you don't like or can't make head nor tail ofnthe .gov, this might help

@gold rover This is from the DVLA website re online transfers, the link you posted was for applying by post.

The vehicle’s original registration number is usually reassigned to it automatically when you take off a private number.
Apply online
The number will be removed immediately if your vehicle does not need an inspection.
You can assign the number to another vehicle as soon as you’ve applied to take it off - use the reference number you get after you apply.

There's a slight change of plan, I'm keeping mine for now and just buying his so I can put mine on retention and stick the old plates back on, when I get the V5 he is having his number back as long as he pays the retention fee.

The link was just to get you to the site, where it had answers to all combinations of keep, swap, sell, etc, etc  Whichever way you look at it, it's not simples
As I said before most of the current plates are cheap enough to let it go every time you change your car , and buy another one, just for the hell of it. :) In fact so are some of the older ones. Only reason I hang on to mine is how 'personal ' it is and how much it's worth. Getting close to being worth more than the Golden Girl :D
. Enjoy your vehicle when you get her.

I'll keep you updated if it happens. The guy said he would be here in 20 minutes but that was nearly 2 hours ago. Hope he hasn't broke down :)

How can you transfer a plate to a car not reg in your name...would you not have to put plate on retention wait till v5 comes back with your name on it...If so and have a private plate you want to keep get paperwork done well before you sell...I've a similar prob here in Portugal bought a 101 on export doc and 15yrs out of date...got all paperwork stamped by IMT here...got matriculation mot last fri passed...but as export doc out of date and no v5 because when you apply for export doc the p.o. surrenders it I'm stuck till IMT issue paperwork in the p.o. name and then I can ins and get plates made put it on road and then transfer it into my name...

@gold rover He got lost but the car is now mine :) Pics to follow when the light reappears. There are a few niggles that I need to search on i.e. Passenger cup holder stuck in, Glove box wont open (I have tried the key in both positions), brake lights sometimes come on when you start the car until you switch the lights on, Brake warning light on which the previous owner says are the nearside front brake pads.

@Shippers The number plate becomes mine with the vehicle, when I get the new V5 I put the private plate on retention and the car gets it's original number back. As this is done online I believe it is instant. I then gift the number back to the original owner who does the same. From my previous post "You can assign the number to another vehicle as soon as you’ve applied to take it off - use the reference number you get after you apply." I don't know if the transfer from me to him is instant but as he now says he does not want it anyway it will be a while before I find a buyer.

It only becomes YOURS if you put it on retention technically as its assigned to a car its just a car registration number which all cars have...like wise if you have a number on retention you have to go through the process of changing your new car into your name and changing its reg number as well in that order...

If you have a look on youtube @backinblack (you must be a ACDC fan) powerfuluk have some vidoes up on taking dash apart, at least you are coming from one model of Land Rover to another so at least it wont be too much of a shock if and when it breaks lol !
