I was reading a lot about them boxes and some people seem to get very good results with some of them. I know that a remap is probably the best option, but like i said, i am just not too sure about putting unnecessary stress on an engine that has done such a high mileage. I think i will stick with blanking the EGR valve for now.

The box just fools the engine brain into thinking less fuel is going in than is so it squirts more fuel in to compensate. More fuel = more power. That's fine but the heads and everything else has been engineered so that the heat distribution is just so. If the engine is already near its limit the map will be tweaked to maximise what the heads etc can take. You can probably tweak bits of the map to higher values if you know what you are doing but a powerbox is indiscriminate. On a low tuned engine this isn't an issue but on a Rangie? People do use them ... and then people have cooling and HG issues. Is it worth the risk? Not for me. A remap by someone who really nows what they're doing though, that's a different matter. Just need to find someone who really knows what they're doing!

As the GM box is close to the limit in terms of torque spec I would be reluctant to pit more through it.....you may find your warranty on the work could be invalidated if you fit one.

Yes, I wouldn't risk one myself. It is a shame that the 'box is so weak, as, if the re-map figures quoted are to be believed, the engine can produce a great deal more power.

I will stay well clear from them boxes then. In the future, I will start looking into a remap maybe. But to be honest, since the RR has the work done on the box, it drives soo much better and smother and this is even before I service it and put the EGR blanking kit on. So i am hoping for a very slight improvement if not at least staying as it is, once the blanking kit is on and the full service is done. I would definately be more than happy with that as she is driving like a dream! I also managed to get the CD changer working again, which is a big morale booster, so all looking good so far!

Holiday Chicken, that is such a good idea, but I imagine that it would have been done already if it was possible!

I thought it was a good idea but then later thought that all the electronics would be different before even contemplating anything mechanical.
Maybe a nice manual gearbox .....

Has anyone fitted a de-cat pipe to the TD6? I did this on a BMW 320d and it made quite a difference to it, not necessarily a lot more power but the turbo seemed to spool up quicker and at lower revs. Stainless ones are available on E-bay for £99-00.

I doubt it will pass its MOT as its a requirement for vehicles built after 1992. But definately a good idea

worth a pop then, I don't know what the TD6 is like compared to the 4.4 but you can put the x5 map into the 4.4 but i drive mine like a granny so it has enough power when i want it.

The ‘023’ model of the 5HP24 transmission was fitted to the BMW 730D with the M57 engine so the hardware exists to be able to put together a unique 5HP24 transmission, with an H35 torque converter, to fit the TD6 L322. Let me know if anyone wants one – although I’ll leave you to sort out the electronics :)
