RR quick release tow bar

Hey there again, i got a question about a quick release tow bar this time.

I removed my tow hitch from the vehicle just before i sold it, so i got the car mounted part which bolts to the crossmember and a fixing up behind the bumper and the detachable tow hitch.

What is it that it fixes to behind the bumper because i never really checked. Is it something that has to be added to fit this type of hitch or is it a standard part of the chassis on all p38 cars.

I only ask because now it comes to selling it there seems to nothing to fix to behind the bumper that potential buyers are feeding back to me.

From memory, the tow bar fits directly on to the chassis and there is no fixing behind the bumper on the P38.
If you go ino RAVE/P38 section there is the accesory fitting section and the towbar should be covered in there.

It seems that some people have this crossmember fitted already and some don't. Presumably if they've ever had a towbar then they will have the crossmember. It seems to be very expensive to buy new though. It appears to bolt on just behind the bumper and supports the front of the towbar bracket.

Had a look at the bosal drawing. No this didnt come off anything like that. It was just one bolt held horizontally across the bumper about m12 m14 in size. With a 24mm socket and spanner just above the tow hitch hole i undid it and slid the bolt out.

Doesn't require a huge cross member like in that photo. The cross member is already on the car up under the spare wheel, it supports the wheel well / boot floor and is welded to the ladder chassis of the RR floor.

Seems this may take some sorting, but this is a far superior model of tow hitch compared to the usual swan neck you have to unbolt. It must be a genuine RR fit item as the boot tool storage area had a perfect fit cut out in it for it, next to the jack.

me mate had the same type... its gen l/r and the cross member behind the bumper is bolted on and wasnt fitted as standard

I have now looked on the rave disc as suggested, and there is a cross member bolted behind the bumper, you are indeed correct.

Seems i overlooked the fact that it was not part of the bodywork it was bolted to.

Oh well if any has the cross member fitted to their car and needs the rest of the tow hitch, or knows of a crossmember so it wouldn't be a problem, i have an alko quick release tow hitch for sale in good/ excellent condition. LOL

I must say that I thought that the tow bar was standard until 4.6 arrived, which doesn't have the fittings. My 4.0 has the removable tow bar and electrics fitted, but the 4.6 doesn't even have the electrics. Dealer option ?????

You sold your Rangie without the tow bar? That was kind of you!

That's typical of people who hang on to the spare keys and take the jack out, especially if it's a decent one. Talk about "Asset stripping"!!!!:behindsofa:

Whats with all the nasty comments?

I stripped anything i could sell off the car to get some money back, for what is spent trying to get it running after the engine just stopped in february and i was still trying to get it running in july with no luck so it went to auction as a NON RUNNER.

The jack and spare key i had just spent £140 for went with it thank you.

Don't know why i'm explaining myself but think it quite unnecessary the added comments to this thread.

Just stating a common occurance and he bites me head off!!!:mooning:

Theres 2 different types of towbar available that I know for the P38. There's the quick release, which is sometimes fitted as standard, and theres the permanent towbar. Different cross-bars are needed for both, but they both sit inside the bumber skin. On the quick release, it seems to be just that bar, but I have a short bar attached to another cross-bar, which is visible under the bumper.

The long bar on the ground goes in the 2 chassis ends.

And the short bar bolts on to that bit hanging down and also bolts onto another cross-member, which SHOULD be already there. If not, you have problems

Just some good natured ribbing, no offence intended I assure you.

Did you empty the fuel tank too?

No didn't empty the fuel tank! LOL

My cavalier is diesel, otherwise i probably would have as there was half a tank in there !

Never mind, whats gone is gone, just have to wait till i get another one now to enjoy the 4x4 life again. I miss just being able to turn off the road and go crazy throught the forest tracks.
