I'm going to look at a 4.6 HSE with LPG near Bolton tomorrow, and I wonder is anyone local who really knows these cars would be kind enough to come and have a look with me ? I'm ok with bodywork and general condition, but I don't know enough about model specific faults to be able to really assess the car. Obviously I'm happy to pay expenses & reasonable fee. Alternatively can anyone recommend a garage in the area that may be able to help ?

Many thanks

Patrick

its very short notice! you'll be as well compiling a list of known faults and cost of repair and taking that with you! check everything, and again and again. pay particular attention to the engine and gearbox as these are probably the most expensive fixes. better to have a few bodywork defects and a a1 engine than a good body and crap engine!

look for any bits in the coolant as this could signify coolant loss. check hoses are firm but not impossible to squeeze together. any exessive steam from exhaust could also mean trouble but some steam will be present as its cold outside. this should all but disapear when revved fairly hard. check antifreeze it should be 50/50 so it will look strong!

Check that everything electrical works and there are no testbook alarm symbols showing on the HEVAC(air con/heater controls)etc. Wet carpets in footwells.

As Gav above mentioned, check coolant level before and after run if possible and suspension reaches all positions on the rocker switch. Engage low ratio side of gearbox too.
Also check LPG conversion is properly certificated.

Hopefully, a member near by will come forward to help you give it a once over Patrick, but if you are unsure of anything, walk away & carry on doing your homework.

Best wishes and kind regards,
Foultrousers

Remember the steering boxes leak- check how much! And wet spots on the front carpets particularly telling if the aircons blocked or fcucked. Rust on the rear wheel arches, tailgate upper and lowers particularly and get underneath and check the chassis as best you can. The electric bits all need testing- heated seats, and the seat adjustment mechanisms can easily be forgotten but are useful features, and ride adjustment- make sure it goes all the way up and down and settles down reasonably quickly. If you can, check the brake pipes for corrosion- see my earlier thread this week- its easy to miss. Condition of electrical wires in the engine bay is often telling- make sure they are not all brittle, it gets hot in there! And a nice test drive- ask the seller to drive first so you can listen closely to the tranny and engine.
Best of luck, hope you pick up a good 'un. Let us all know!!

Went to have a look at the car, it's very tidy, 57K with all MOT's & plenty of receipts (but not too many), everything seems to work, couldn't find any rust. Although the front end has been swapped for a later grill / bonnet / lamps (I assume a fairly minor bump, nothing on HPI) all the legs are straight and the welding all factory. It's going into Stratstones on Tuesday to have the TC checked out (apparently the light came on once) and they are going to give it a health check & look over for me. Hopefully I should pick it up next weekend....

This is it Land Rover : Ranger Rover 4.6 HSE 1999 'LPG'

Fingers crossed please
