Hi Guys

Just bought a second hand 1984 2.5D 90 showing 80,000 miles on the clock!

Being completley new to to owning a vehicle of this age I was wondering where I should start with the routine maintenane work, what should be my priorities and what work as a novice i can do myself.

Thanks in advance!!!!

Change axle oil, just need socket rachet without a socket to undue the plugs.
Use EP90 oil. You'll need, Bucket to catch oil/section of hose & a funnel to fill up.
Grease propshaft, can be a bit fiddly...
I do the above after every heavy offroad session (not greenlaning), or when i take my 90 swimming. Keeping a landrover greased lubricated can stop allsorts of probs.;)
I also grease my door hinges, as these tend to rot quicker than other parts.
Steam clean the underneath and then waxoyle it.... most truck/coach garages have a ramp and steam cleaner they'll let you use for around £10. I used a cheap undersealant earlier in the year..... it washed off after driving through floods:eek:... I recently used "Waxoyle" from Halfrauds & its perfect:D, you can do it yourself laying under the 90... but cover the ground with old blankets 1st. Remember to have the can of waxoyle sat in a bucket of hot water... to thin it for ease of spraying.
Job for a garage
If you aint done it yet..... cambelt should be verified when it was replaced, if you cant verify it....then get it done asap.....as a few hundred squid is easier on the pocket than a few grand.
I'll leave the rest of the tips/advice for Grunt to mention;)

How often does the cambelt need replacing?

Recommended every 38k miles or every 5yrs... But will need to be sooner if vehicle as been driven hard (So landrover say).

Recently had mine replaced and thats it now.... I'll never do it again, soon as my engine goes bang i'll be sticking either a 5.0L chevy engine in it or something similar. (Only driving 30miles a week, i can afford the fuel).

This may help you....

some good advice for DIY maintenance

.

If you buy a Haynes manual you will find it contains the servicing schedule, fluid capacities, how to do the various jobs etc.

Advice for people newly taking up self maintenance and servicing is a common topic and attracts sometimes variable and conflicting advice. As you must be aware there are a LOT of landrover forums so I suggest you look at as many as possible and search under a number of suitable topics.
Yes, I'm being lazy but it is all already out there.
