My Defender 300tdi has developed a strange squeal which seems to run in conjunction with the turbo on and off with accelerator but doesn't happen when going down hill. Someone suggested transfer box oil.

I've thought about changing the oils anyway, is anyone able to give me a rough price for the above fluids and labour before I take it somewhere?

cheers

I would get a second opinion.
A squeal when on boost (turbo working) normally indicates either an exhaust manifold or intercooler pipework has a fine split and this is what gicves it the squeak/squeal, bit like when you purse your lips to whistle.

Everything holds roughly 2 to 2.5 litres, so your are looking at 7.5 litres of 8090 and 2.5 litres of g/box oil.
1 hour for a garage thats geared up for it.

I agree with Lynall - I had a similar thing once it was a split exhaust manifold. Nothing stopping you changing the oils - its dead easy. Theres a picture guide on here.

Thanks guys

I just want to pay someone who knows them so that they can have a look at the diff etc for me to see what nick they are in. I'm not that mechanically minded although can change brakes etc

In simple terms if the oil is just dirty there is nothing wrong with the trans, if the oil is silvering then you have issues, the whole drive train is pretty tough.
