Disco 2 Roof chop?

Can I chop the roof by a few inches and not affect any wrath from the authorities when it comes to MOT time etc? I'm having difficulty getting it into my storage/garage and if It can be done it will help immensely. I have seen "bobtails" etc. but don't know if these are off road only, I need to use mine road legal.
