I finally faced up to looking at the remains of my much battered japspec this morning.

I found the air pipe adjacent to the turbo and hence the turbo too, with much engine oil pooled in there. Seeing as the car was laying on its O/S for over 2 hours , could this be from the breather pipe that joins the air pipe just by the turbo ?

Also, trying to start it, all the electrics come up OK then when when I try to get it to turn there is a clunk noise and the lights all dim....I assume that this is a dead short from the starter or the cabling . But, the vehicle, an automatic, is in park, foot on brake, all the procedure and nothing . It moves into neutral OK . I have not yet tried to turn the engine by the crank nut .

In the accident , as I remember it , the engine was running as I lay on the side, inside , began to stutter, so I turned it off before it stalled . But of course , I cannot be sure . Much ATF was spilt from somewhere and the steering reservoir is still full . Could it have stalled in gear ? Would this sieze an engine in some way ?

I am still not too well , havent recovered from the head impact and hence not too bright at the moment. Much of this may seem stupid or basic or pointless but I am frankly not in a state to tell !

try turning by hand first ,remove glow plugs if locks to let any oil out, gear box oil would have come out of gear box thru dipstick tube ,oil would have collected in breather system when on drivers side and run through when upright again gear box will just need topping up shouldnt have hurt it,good to see your on with something positive

Take the glow plugs out and spin it over for a bit, make sure its not full of oil where it shouldn't be.

This will get some air movement going.

Then once you're happy things seem about right, check the engine levels. Check for fluid mixture anywhere, oil in water etc just in case.

If it all seems right then it could well be right. Glow plugs back in and stand back.

Get the pipe off the air filter and get a few rags ready to shove in the pipe to block it up (to stall it) just in case it starts running on it's own oil for some reason.

If it does this it will be loud, very smoky and rather scary, but act fast to avoid seizing the engine up.

Good luck :)

i presumed clunk maybe hydraulic lock with oil ,it happens easy often when fitting engines they are locked due to been laid on there side while been delivered,if your worried about running on start with inlet pipe of manifold dont use rag i have seen one sucked in right down the side of piston use a flat board to block manifold

So, glow plugs out ,if it turns over by hand, then try it on the starter with a board handy to block the air intake ? I suppose that I need to clean the oil out of the turbo and the MAF, too....with what ? Mop up and then paraffin ?

If it turns over on the starter, then plugs back in and try to start with board handy to stop run-on ?

turbo will clean itself if you remove air pipes to and from it ,test your old plugs with jump leads when out if glow quick reuse them
