Roll cage info

Hi,

I'm intending to get a roll cage with the distant dream of persuading the wife to be interested in some driving adventures. I've downloaded the ARC and MSA blue book and had a good read - yes something to this spec would be completely over the top but having looked at how the likes of safety devices / Raptor etc bolt in I'm not convinced with the the chassis connections - I generally like overkill.

I've a 110 hard top and as my general commute I don't want it to look like I'm invading the work car park, I've also a height restriction so a full external cage doesn't appeal.

After lots of internet searches I've found one example that I like the basic look of:

The outside tube along the length and everything else internal really fits the bill.

While I've sketched up lots of ideas I can't find any example of the roof sandwich plates - the internal/external brackets. Can anyone point me in the direction where I could get more details on these? Anyone sell them?

And if I've still got your attention: The only company I could find that would design/weld/install to a standard where they'd provide paperwork was these guys:

40-ish years ago we made our cages out of scaff poles TIG welded together!
Times and materials have changed a bit since then!!

Did mine as well, no complaints from me

If you contact whitbreads they will build to how you want it.
Have external front hoop it gives you more room by your feet.

I was advised yesterday that https://www.racpartsltd.co.uk/ were worth a look at too. Not much difference between a 2 and 4 hour drive to any of them so they all have a chance.

Mine was built on a truck cab 90 so no roof mounts. It passes through the wings onto a spigot on the outrigger where it’s then welded

Normally it's flat plate either side of the roof & 4 x nuts/bolts
Is there nothing showing on the MSA web site?
I know in the msa book it shows this.

It looks like curved sections but can't see where you'd get the parts from. Just thinking about how they join to other parts.

Rear hoop..Get small piece of tube scallop it so will fit(like a T shape) weld flat steel plate on, this will then weld to rear hoop to take the tube from front to rear hoops(which will also have a flat steel plate to bolt through roof)
It's an art to get the tubes scalloped for welding.
Speak to Whitbread's he has done loads & should have photos.
Chat to all the cage makers
They can make alterations as they go
Unless you are really confident don't buy a kit & fit it yourself.

I would suggest giving them a call, or even arranging a time to drop in and have a chat. Plus their unit is just over yard from RAC who do some nice stuff.

cheers @hicap phill, I know my limitations! I've welded on a rear cross member with legs to my 110 and plated up some chassis repairs to a friends disco but consistently nice tube welds?? I don't think so. For the amount of material I'd waste practicing I may as well get a professional to do the job.

For those already with cages is there anything I should be thinking about/asking for?
I have a snorkel and bar lights to install later and am happy buying mounts separately so I've flexibility where they end up rather then welding on tabs at this stage.



The vehicle is a 1998 hard top 110, 300tdi.
There is no sun roof or alpine windows.
Headlining is fitted.

1. Front hoop and external roof bars welded as one piece to roof plates
2. The top two tubes connecting Front and Main hoops are to be as low as possible to minimise vehicle height
3. Body sliders welded to body plates and bolted through to Main, Middle and Rear hoops
4. Cross bracing on main hoop will allow
a. The use of 4-point seat belt for front seats
b. Fitting of two rear facing “jump seat” dimensions xxxxxx (waiting for supplier info)

The sketch does not clearly show the hoop/chassis fixations.
5. To retain maximum internal space the hoops shall remain against the sides of the vehicle and not join the chassis via the load area. Additional outriggers for the hoops to attach to may be required.

Don't forget 2 rear brace bars between Red & purple.

Is yours a 5 door?
Have you thought about a full external? Makes the motor look wider. But protects it more

2 door hard top.
I'm trying to resist the diagonal brace bar that would connect from the top of the red hoop to the base of the purple / chassis. It starts to take up too much room on the inside of the vehicle - I've got my eyes on a few storage boxes. I do appreciate what you say though - I'll have a hard think about it.

I think the full external ones look a bit too much, it's my daily vehicle after all. I don't want to start looking like an extra in The Troll Hunter.

well it took some time but it's finally fitted
