Hi All,
For want of the correct termination the rocker cover gasket has gone on my 1998 Tdi Discovery, I have booked it in to have this repaired on Friday and while they are their I am having them re set the tappet's, my question is how often should the tappet's be re set is it just a question of listening for more noise from that area or should they be done periodicly.

Trevor.

12,000miles or thereabouts... For the sake of a £1 gasket do the gasket everytime the cover is off. 20min job.

Let's get this right your gona pay sumone to change a rocker cover gasket?

It takes verry little time and requires the most basic of tools!

If it was just the rocker cover I could do it my self but as I want the tappet's doing as well they may as well do it all, I spent 18 years in the car industry so I don't like working on cars any more and my time is at a premium so for the sake of £30 what is the problem.

Trevor.

do u hav to take inj pipes off to remove the rocker cover? I only ask because I am going to change the lift pump and I think u have to take 2 pipes off for that so whilst I am in there i might do the leaky rocker gasket.

duh, I dont know what I was thinking about the injector pipes. They are on the same side as the pump. for some daft reasson I thought they went over the top (as I do sometimes) Anyways, manual says remove injector pipes 3 and 4 in order to change the lift pump. Just done the job withease without touching any injector pipes. Woo hoo my first oily hands since getting my disco!
