Rocker Cover Leak

I have a L reg 200tdi and i have a little oil leak, looks loads but oil level stays same, the source of the problem is the rocker cover (I'm told this is common). I spoke to a chappy and he said just change the seal, take the rocker cover off and replace the seal. Sounds easy and seal only cost £4, BUT is it really this simple of un-screwing the bolts removing the cover cleaning it up abit and slapping on a new seal or am i being too hopeful??

That's about it although you will have to move things (hoses) to get access, you also may require the semi circle seals at the cylinder head ends, the existing seal may be ok just a clean and replace with some liquid sealant.

I agree with Discool, but I'd also suggest checking the injector leak-of pipes, they're prone to becoming brittle and cracking thus leaking diesel .. which looks like a rocker cover gasket issue!

If i clean the lot up and just wait and see will this become evident? Or should i just replace the rocker cover gasket anyway to be safe as i dont know how long ago it was done if at all. They don't cost alot and i'm assuming that it cant do any harm or cause me other problems.......???
I shall also check the pipes as suggested better safe than sorry ay. I can feel the haynes manual getting alot of use, as to be honest i ain't got a clue which one is the injector pipe, just having a poke around and learning as i go :boink:

I'd clean it up, then do the gasket anyway!

Easy job, gets you started on home maintenance ...

You might find that previous owners/mechanics have used a liquid gasket on each side of the normal one .. make sure you clean it all off, especially and blobs .. not only can they make the cover not sit flat, but if they're on the inside edge can detach and block engine oilways etc. Cleanliness is good ... there aren't that many bolts holding it down, so the flatter you can make the mating surfaces/gaskets, the better.

Before i start this the weekend does anyone have a pic of a rocker cover leak for me to compare where the oil is coming from. Strange request I know but would be useful just to be sure. If no joy i will clean up and then post up a pic of my leak (i know ur all excited about this prospect ) to see if any of you can diagnose where it might be coming from and a solution, i know i'm a pain in the ass but ohh well if you dont ask you dont get.

I'm pretty sure i've got a leak from there too, not the most important thing to do, at least it'll stop the engine bay rusting lol.
But really it is very simple to do, even changing the head gasket is a pleasure on the dear old landy and cheap to....cost my mate loads in milk for my coffee's though.

A good easy start to landy loving. Won't take long.

Brill Stu thanks has made me feel more confident in doing this.
I'm spending all weekend under her this weekend though cleaning it all up and scrubbing away any rust in preperation to treat the lot, prevention is better than cure i suppose
