Guys I have a 2004 Disco TD5 with 147K on the clock.

Now at 50 and 60 mph no noise at 65 plus there is a loud noise which sounds like tyre noise rumbling on the road. When I press the clutch in the engine revs and the noise goes away. Let the clutch out at 65 and the noise is back.

My question is this, is it the gear box ?

Thanks

Sounding like you're running over the motorway rumble strip at around 60 or so is usually a prop shaft problem, the first thing to check is for wear/splits in the rubber doughnut flexible coupling at the rear end of the rear prop shaft.

The next places to look would be for wear in the Hardy-Spicer UJs; one on the front end of the rear shaft and three on the front prop shaft; one on the front end and two in the cardon double joint on the back end of the front shaft.

I suppose your rumble could be in the T-box but it's much more likely to be the prop shaft(s).

Other members have found that the balance of the rear wheels can introduce vibration at speed too.
