Currently running my TD5 110 station wagon on BFG AT tyres which are now ten years old. Considering that I never really go off road other than banks and ditches on the lanes I live by, I was thinking of swapping to a road tyre. This would enable the truck to fit under most height restrictions at multi storey car parks etc and give a quieter drive when on proper A roads or motorways. Any recommendations people?

Thanks

There will not be a huge difference between AT and what are often called "all weather" noise wise.
Fitting a lower profile tyre to fit into multi story's will upset your gearing, needing more revs to obtain the same road speed as before.
You have a roof rack in your pic. Take it off to reduce hight, reduce wind noise and gain milage. Do you really need it all the time?

A "proper" roof rack like that will massacre mpg and add tons of noise with what is already a brick.
Most tyres have a noise rating but remember db is not a linear scale

There won't be any height difference just by going for a road tyre, unless you change size. Which is an option, but depends what size you have now. Smaller tyres will also impact gearing. It is all possible however.

In terms of tyres... do you drive hard or fast? If no, then any quality tyre is likely to be 100% fine. I'd personally avoid budget ditch finders.

Again, depending how you drive, you may want to get a milder AT or even a winter biased or all season tyre. A pure road tyre is fine, but if you would use the vehicle in the snow, you may find them underwhelming.

To be fair i'm impressed that you can hear the tyre noise above all the other noise that your 110 creates.

Great line (above) from @300bhp/ton :)

I have a couple of roof bars for when needed. I DO NOT leave them on, loads of wind noise and great when off road for catching over growth.

Just to stick my oar in.

I ran Insa Turbo Rangers (265/75 R16, with 50mm spacers) for the last 10 years. Recently had exactly the same thought - "when was the last time i went off road in this thing?"

I splashed out and bought a set of Michelin Latitude Cross 235/85 R16, and honestly, road noise quieter, motorway driving feels far more refined, the steering wheel shudder I put up with all the way from 40 to 60mph disappeared.

Best 400-something quid I've spent for a long time. Kept the Insas just in case I need them, but for a daily drive, this is a sheet load better.

Alm.

Steering wheel shudder is usually swivel pre-load ...

Thanks all. I stripped all the rack, bars, lights etc off years ago. I like the sound of the Michelin Latitude Cross 235/85 R16,

£400 sounds very cheap?

Kumho AT52. Much quieter than the mud pluggers the last own had on mine. Wearing very well. Good in the dry and wet. Only driven on grass and gravel as "offroading" goes and they were absolutely fine.

The BFG AT’s on my disco 1 were the best tyres I’ve had. They had excellent wear and Road holding for a Land Rover. I’ve currently got Cooper ATR’s on my 90 and they are all terrain but with a slightly more Road-biased pattern and again last well and have good road manners.
