my 87 still has the olde world riveted plates where the black letters are riveted to the yellow pressed backing plate they are a bit manky.

are these still legal - can i get new ones made or am i likely to get tugged with the copshop with even my old ones if i clean them up ?

given they currently dont have a makers name on them or any of the other adornments current plates must have surely i can just throw on some show plates provided they are a 100% copy of the original factory plates - font/spacings ?

As far as I know, if they were fitted on the vehicle as standard when new, they are still legal, and always will be.

Plenty of classics and vintage still running around with white letters on a black background.

see i thought that too but then i read somewhere that post 73 all replacement plates must be made to current regs - how ever i can get show plates that would be 100% copys of what i currently have but not manky and dog eared.

technically illigal i guess - but who would know if i did swap em or not....

i have photos showing the old pressed plates on the car prior to strip down

Theoretically, you could get in trouble if it were somehow proved that the plates were replaced post-2001. I'd say in practice, replacing like for like should be perfectly fine.

What's wrong with the old ones? Could they be restored rather than replaced?
