Bought my 110 CSW a few months ago. As it had done 187,000 miles and unclear of when the cam belt was last changed I asked a local "land rover specialist" to change the cam belt and aux belt.

The truck needed some further work on it as not sure how it got through its last MOT. I was told of a chap about an hour away and after an internet search and going to see him have asked him to do some work. When I went to see him to discuss what needed to be done he saw the sticker I had put on with the cam belt replacement date and mileage. He commented it was strange to change a cam belt but not to change the gasket. It was an old colour. I have only done a thousand miles.

So I asked him to check the belt had been changed and it has NOT.

I guess I need to go back to the "specialist" and ask why he charge me for work not done. not looking forward to it.

on a positive note, its good it been found out as the belt is on its last legs and could have been an expensive mess to sort out.
 
Has the belt cover been removed and checked? Or merely gasket old and mouthing off
 
Thers a few dodgy garages about.
Like marksx says Name and Shame, so they dont do it to someone else.
Also make sure you get your money back.

Good point.

Does it say on the invoice that the cam belt was changed, or does it just state parts and labor ?

Did you pay by credit card ?
 
The cover has been removed and I have a picture of the belt.

I would really look forward to having a word with a "specialist" who'd done that to me!

DON'T name them until you've sorted this out, but if you tell us the rough area you're in people may be able to point you in the direction of a trusted garage.

Always possible the belt has been changed and then overtightened causing the belt to ride of the front of the pulleys and rub on the inside of the front cover, seen it done on 300tdi engines
Also looks like fresh spanner/socket marks on the 3 bolts on the inj pump pulley
 
Maybe I am missing something, wasn't there a change to have the bottom pully changed to one with flanges, instead of the pulley on the tensioner.

or does this not make any diffeence?

anyway , IMHO, if they did not change it, then you were lucky to find out, as it is not looking good, go back and have a visit with them.
But if they did change it , then it is shoddy work from them as it is not fitted correctly.

yes you should have the later bottom pulley with the guides instead of the tensioner having the guides, the set up in the pic has neither so bottom pulley needs changing as well

I think the tensioner does have the guides, you can just see it on the outside edge, But still makes me wonder how the belt ended up like this, changed not changed!

They've not used the updated crank pulley which stops the timing belt sliding forward .. look at the post and pics from when I did mine .. I'd say they ripped you off by not fitting a complete updated timing belt and pulley set, or did you supply parts and they do labour only?

On second thoughts, they could easily have actually changed 'the belt' .. but only the belt and kept the old idler and crank pulleys to 'save cost'.

You need to be absolutely clear on what work you wanted done, what you actually asked for, and on what work they should have done.

'WE' as Landy owners KNOW you should change the pulleys, they SHOULD know too, but if you just said change the belt then you might not have a case against them. Just being Devils Advocate ..

When I was shown the gasket had not been changed, I looked at the bolts and housing. The this I noted was no clean areas on the bolts they looked as if they had not been disturbed.

if your a "specialist" you should tell the customer that the pulleys need to be upgraded.

The job is now being done properly with the correct updated parts.

good luck going back to the "specialist",

changing the pulleys, from my investigation into it, when I did mine, was to stop a potential problem. Most people did it for extra safety. I may be wrong, But i do not think it is something that is classed as "MUST DO" change , more of a "whilst you are there it is much better to do the change to the pulleys"

but whichever way you look at it, changed or not changed ,the "specialist" did something wrong.

So after sending a letter no response. I did some more digging.

Sam Greenstock has left the country and gone to France. I have no way of contacting him other than going to see his mother and I guess I will get no joy.
