Within 6000km the ring gear and starter are damaged again. It starts but often with crushing noise.
I hoped it would be better with a brand new starter .....but .the gear has at the dead point too much damage.
I do not have time coming months to change the gear so my question is ....would it help for a period of time to turn the ring gear for 1/4.
With 4 cilinder engines it helps because they alway come back at the same spot but is that also the case with 8 cilinder engines.

Could try blipping the throttle just be4 switching the engine off might stop in a different place .....RR..:D

we just checked the starter ring all over but the ring is too far gone.even when the start of the turning is ok it slips out half way.So I ll have to do the renewal all over again.

my next question is how come that a starter and ring are damaged already within such a short period .They were new and were replaced by a experienced land rover mechanic.

One is tempted to ask how you know they were actually both replaced. Bearing in mind the labour involved in changing the ring gear.

As said, it is hard to tell whether it has been replaced..

Unless you pop off the inspection cover off the bottom of the bellhousing and poke a torch in there ;)

If the starter pinion is incorrect it will chew up a ring gear in no time flat. A new ring gear and starter should last the life of the engine.

A new starter can cover up a worn ring gear,if there is no teeth missing on the ring gear,,,There is possibility that a new outer ring on the flywheel was fitted but at the wrong temperature [Expanded over the old flywheel] it makes the metal soft ,not tempered , wont last long:(......RR...
