Hiya,

I have a weird problem which I think must be an earth fault but would like some help diagnosing which earthing point it could be.

When signaling left all near side lights work as they should. When signalling right both sides immuniate and flash at the right speed, but slightly dimmer.

As I said, I think this is an earth fault, I've disconnected my trailer plug incase that was the issue. What earth connector would it be and how would I fix it, or is it something else?

- All indicator bulbs work.

Thanks in advance

I forgot to mention. Before this happened, I turned the key in the ignition to find the dash wont light up and the dials wouldn't move. I replaced the fuse and the indicator fuse. Then this happened. Must be related, this was after a trailer was disconnected.

More info, I've done some digging and it appears to tow, you should swap the relay for a 4 pin one? (currently a 3 pin) could that of caused the issue?

It's not the towing relay. It'll be something at the towing electrics or the hazard switch, as the two sides don't combine anywhere else in the system. It's unlikely to be an earth fault, as all corners have independent earths.

I see, well the hazard light on the dash doesnt come on when it happens, and there isn't a towing relay as such, whoever installed it just put it onto the trailer wires, i was referring to the indicator relay if that makes a difference. Like I said, I've cut that out now in an effort to reduce things to fault find. What should I look at?

Sorry I ment it's not the lack of towing relay. The only difference is the towing relay has an extra output, so it flashes the tell tale on the dash. That actually indicator flashing section is identical on both flasher relays.

If you've removed the tow bar wiring, then the only other places to check would be the hazard switch and possibly the column switch.

Okay, I did have a quick look at the indicator stalk, connector and wires all seemed okay... I guess I'll look at the hazard switch and all the wires a bit closer... Strange that it happened after disconnecting a trailer though. I'll report back when I've has a look.

Hazard switch and wires look OK. With the Hazard switch disconnected there are no indicators at all. Are there any steps I can follow to diagnose this quicker?

Have you disconnected the tow bar loom in the boot? It's behind the plastic trim on the RHS of the boot.
I've disconnected the tow bar connector from that loom (original owner cut the connector off and used crimps) from behind that trim.

It sounds like he may have cocked up the electrics. I'd be thinking about redoing anything he touched.

Indeed, but there isn't really allot connected at the moment. I think I might try removing the indicator switch and shorting it manually to see if that works?

The wiring is separate once it's gone through the hazard switch. From memory the rear light wiring to the rear goes down the LH side of the car for the left lights and the RH rear light wiring goes down the RH side of the car.

I've come across a faulty hazard switch before now, which did link the sides together. I can't think of anywhere else that could be the issue, other than the column switch.
You could test the hazard switch by removing is and linking the wiring at the connector. If you can prove it's the switch or not, you'll be one step closer to solving the problem. ;)

I've done that to the indicator switch, but can't figure out what needs linking in the hazard switch to test it.
