Haven't watched it yet but I'm guessing it will be spectacular. Think Hammond drives up a damn at Rhayader which isn't far from me so should be a good watch.

Just watched it and it's a bit of an anticlimax, but nice to see Land Rovers feature on tele nevertheless. The landy bit is in the last 15 minutes or so btw.

Didn't really see the point in it personally. With all the extra modifications they did, it may as well have been a nissan micra!

Would have much preferred to see some sort of expedition in landies

indeed it was a recreation, and as the article opened, they said about how the original advert was a bit of a fudge as it wasn't the vehicles winch which pulled it up, and so on.

Then bugger me, if they then fit a modified hydraulic winch to the series, with a standalone engine mounted in the back.

so just a different fudge then.

was still impressive though.

I found it disappointing as I do with most of Topgear these days sadly. A tribute to Defender would have been to show off its sensible abilities, maybe im doing something wrong but I hardly ever drive my landrover up a reservoir!

I watched this episode and I was wincing as Hammond drove a beautiful Series I along the wet beach and through the salt water. I really hope someone was waiting with a freshwater hose as soon as he finished playing. For a man who clearly does love Land rovers I should have thought he could find a better 'tribute'. But then they all said the 'new' Defender will be the same as the old one? What do they know that we don't?

I've done it to my series 3, driving on a wet beach that is, (in fact I did it for my photoshoot for classic landy mag) but did nip down the lifeboat station for a hose down straight after though :D

Whilst driving the 'del boy' Land-Rover he knowledgably stated that they were that colour because of the excess paint left from Spitfire manufacture....bollox, now if that had been a sage green LR.

At least with no Defender production for a couple of years it will help the Japanese pick up truck market immensely.

Currently most of the utilities have Defenders, now they can try something foreign instead.

Scammonden Dam in the 60's, and it was either done by Pennine or YROC and sponsored by Warne Winches!

Someone will probably have the full details available ...

It was nice they did a tribute, but as with most Top Gear stuff - I would have liked a bit more detail. Although I get that most people just want the entertainment.

I was talking to someone at work who said 'did you see that tribute to a winch on top gear last night?'

He makes a good point - it might as well have been any car!

Oh and I should add - I did the Defender celebration factory tour on Monday - absolutely fantastic day out. Cannot recommend it enough! Even if just for the stretched Defender they transport you in - it's a 146" wheelbase!!
