Rewiring

Some of you will know my rebuild, bit of a mix and match but basically a series 2a .
Now just thinking ahead here about wiring as all I have is the old harness in bulckhead, No Chassis or Engine Loom.
Please dont laugh like I did but a mate said that I can just use Trailer Wire to run through chassis and engine bay without the proper wiring,. Has anyone done this ? or can it be done ?

Pulled it out of the S2 chassis up build I'm doing...putting a new loom back in but stripped outer sheething off and have a lot of wire now for rewires did my mates nissan pickup horn...depends if you want it original though more wires than you need...

Trailer cable is a little overkill. You only need one wire to prove nothing works. I have loads and nothing works so it’s a tad confusing

How many wires is there in a proper series 2a chassis loom ? theres is loads in the bulkhead one a lot more then whats in trailer wire.

Off the top of my head.
Indicators
side\number plate all off the same
brake
earth is off the chassis at the back...so that is 4...

Thats because youve got the fusebox\regulator\ignition\charging\dash indicator systems...

When I pulled through the rear cable loom I added three extra wires and just wrapped the original loom with the three new wires into a single bundle using a roll of loom tape.
I haven't worked out what I am going to use the extra cables for (one will be an additional earth) but thought it handy for accessories later. They will just be terminated in the light box at the rear and used when needed. There aren't that many cables in the original loom and it is essentially just tank sender and rear lights.

Not all trailer cable is equal. You can use it but try and get the higher amp rated one.
More room to store the smoke.

Right so could I use the Trailer Cable ? and just add extra wires for tank sender and others as needed ?

Sure, why not? It's got an earth cable. Just avoid cheap cable.

You could use 5 core household too, plenty thick enough for 12v and well insulated

Yes you can, I did my S3 4 years ago and i havant had any problems at all.
I used heavy trailer cable and run it to a waterproof junction box under the back of the tub, run the wires to the left and to the right and to the trailer light plug.
Just use the trailer lights colour code to wire every thing up, and you can't go
wrong.

Sounds easy for someone that knows electrics , which certainly is not me
here is pics of wires from bulkhead there is about 12 coming from main loom, most of them seem to go under and in to clocks, then there is a few dotted about loose.

Kev that plastic trunking is not original but the wires look to be lucas colour scheme pdf attached will tell you what most of the wire are for.
I put some of these lucar connectors in the rear of my tub to make it easy to connect the lights.

Thanks Doug i will print that out, hope there the same colors as on my bulkhead.
Will have the fire on next time you come up.

Sorry Kev, I did ant realize your landy was disassembled, it is easy when the landy
is up and running.
It looks like Doug has put you in the right direction, best of look with your rebuild.
Do you have a rebuild thread ?

Thanks Mate, yes kind of a rebuild thread here Possibly another Project | Page 2 | LandyZone - Land Rover Forum but keep starting others when I hit a problem. , should really keep everything in one thread,

Looking at that mess with plastic trunking have you thought about a new complete loom from Craddocks?...

Thanks for the link, just had a look through to see if it would give me some
motivation to do my Lightweight, I like the brick acid method you have used,
I think I will give it a go when I get going.

Yes Mate If I can get away with trailer wire will save a lot of money .
I have also looked at Autosparks as I thought my Mate was taking the p!!s when he said I could use trailer wire.
