I lost reverse while parking on the High Street today. Well I say I lost it, but the problem was that the gearstick wouldn't go past the gate. It came up against the stop but simply wouldn't go into gear. It was like there there just wasn't a gear in that position. Normally the stick just slides over and forward easily with a flick of the wrist.

After a period of the blackest despair, I did eventually gain reverse by attempting to push the stick with increasing roughness until it banged into gear. It happened once more but has been fine since.

Is this just a case of me needing to clean up and grease the linkage, or an indication of something more serious?

It sounds like the latch/gate stuck or shifted. What gearbox is it?

if he shoved it forwards i would assume a LT77.
Did lifting the clutch up and then putting it down again help?

Not sure on the details but it's a 1992 200TDi with a five speed box. Reverse is to the left and forward, next to first.

The first time it happened I tried pushing the bloody thing a few feet backwards and also pumped the clutch a bit before it went in. The second time, it just went in with a good hard push.
