I lost reverse while parking on the High Street today. Well I say I lost it, but the problem was that the gearstick wouldn't go past the gate. It came up against the stop but simply wouldn't go into gear. It was like there there just wasn't a gear in that position. Normally the stick just slides over and forward easily with a flick of the wrist.
After a period of the blackest despair, I did eventually gain reverse by attempting to push the stick with increasing roughness until it banged into gear. It happened once more but has been fine since.
Is this just a case of me needing to clean up and grease the linkage, or an indication of something more serious?
