UPDATEd - please read last section.....

Hi.new to the forum and and Land Rovers..

I have just bought an '02 1.8 ES freelander to use up the stables and a few short runs and having a few issues with it. I still have a 3 month mechanical warranty on it so would like some knowledgeable input on it before I go back to the garage and they pat my little blonde head again....(knobbers!)

Bit of background - I bought this car as around 20,000 miles ago it had a full replacement engine, clutch kit and fly wheel done by Rodger Young which is a very reputable dealer in Saltash. It also has a full service history from them as well.

Now the problem... The clutch needs to be depressed all the way down to change gears and its a right faff to get it into reverse.... Most of the time it grinds. Without wanting to sound like a plank, its hard to locate reverse sometimes.

Help......

Take it back, I suspect the clutch release lever is beginning to seize, this strains the hydraulic system and bends the slave cylinder bracket.
Just for future reference the gearbox fitted to the 1.8 Freelander as well as most other Rover cars is known to crunch into reverse even when the clutch is working correctly. Power Train Products who built the box suggest pushing the clutch peddle to the floor and waiting 2 seconds before selecting reverse. This allows time for the gears to stop turning before the reverse idler engages. There is no synchro on reverse.

also, try selecting fifth before selecting reverse, this stops the geartrain terefore reducing grinding occurence, but as nodge suggests, check out the clutch arm first.

Sorry to be bringing this thread back up but I need a little more advice

I took the car back to the garage (3 month warranty on mechanical faults) and he has just had a look. Now remember i'm no mechanic and I am just repeating what he told me.

He first checked the hydraulics on the clutch as it did need pressing all the way down.. He said that was fine as *something* was engaging properly. He then told me the slave pate was bent/ not returning on the springs (which I have read is a common fault) he told me the unit will need replacing.

Now here is my issue. As I have only just bought the car he will as a "good will gesture" pay for half of the replacement as he does not cover wear and tear. The whole clutch was replaced back in 2007 but it has only done 30k since.

He will charge me around £180 including labour (1/2 price)

Is this wear and tear? or is this a mechanical fault???

*** Whilst I wait for replies I'm off to buy some brown hair dye so stop t*&ts thinking they can take advantage of me!***

What is wrong and what is going to be replaced? Whilst most warranties don't cover wear and tear, it's a bit mean for them to not cover replacement if you didn't actually get a fair wear and tear out of it.

I have just been back to pick up the car - its booked in for next Wednesday to be fixed..
I reckon I am now getting a fair deal. Much easier to discuss in person than on the phone in a slight bit of shock..

Its the pressure plate(?) that has worn. He is going to get a local garage who does jobs for him to fit a new clutch (trade price and mates rates) we are going halves on this - £180 each. At the same time he will sort my exhaust out for free as its just started blowing (a few gaskets(?) and joints need sorting)

This is probably why the last owner PX it in.... They did spend £2400 on a new engine, clutch and fly wheel a few years ago...

Ensure that the Clutch release arm is fully stripped then lubricated when they do the work on the clutch. I still think there is a good chance that lack of lube there that's causing the problem

When I get mine done I will be fitting one of these clutch release arms with a grease nipple so it can be lubed without stripping the gear box :- MGF MG F Uprated Clutch Release Lever Arm PG1 Gearbox Brand New | eBay

NB this info gleaned from this forum reading up on 1.8 clutch probs - Thanks
