I've got a 1991 h reg discovery series 1, 200 TDi thats completly standard. After completing a round with the MOT man i`ve got a ticket for another 12 months motoring! Unfortunalty i`ve noticed while driving it today that the Rev Counter suddenly stopped while doing about 50, it was working previosly no problem. could it be a know defunct rev counter or just a loose connection within the engine bay? Thanks

Check the small wires into the back of the alternator, you might have to remove the heat sheild. If they look a bit corroded, then take them off and give them a scrape, to get a good clean connection.

This is a common problem, and has a tendency to sort itself out for a while before doing it again!

Thank you. I have since looked at the alternator with more detail and found that a wire had seperated from its spade connector (?) and all i need know its attached it back in some form or way. My only query know is that should there be a heat shield on the back of the alternator as mine doesn`t appear to have one. The alternator appears to be new but put on before i bought the car 6 months ago.

They should have one but many don't, mine included, it could be wise to get one, stops the manifold/turbo heat melting the wires.
