My 1985 LR90, has had the original 2.5td engine replaced with a 200tdi at some stage during its life but it doesn't have a rev counter - something that I am quite uncomfortable with.

Is there any way I can buy a rev counter and in some way fit it to the 200tdi engine and have it as a separate pod / dial on the dash?

If so, what do I need to buy, where can I get the bits and how do I fit it?

Cheers,
Gid

You need to look on the back of your alternator for a W terminal. If you have this you can buy a tachometer/rev counter and wire it to the "pulse" on the Alternator. I have only seen these in large diameters though, i am after a 52mm one. Croytec do them but want alot of money, look on ebay, most places do them, just make sure its an alternator one as the others run of coil ignition.

If you get a 52mm one off of fleabay ( i got one for about £20) it will fit perfectly in the spare dial hole in the dash, then just run a wire from the alt to it. Alternatively you can buy a pod for it to sit on top of the dash but i don't think this is as neat!

hi, i am after help/infomation following from this old post

i recently purchased a rev counter from the above ebay shop for my 1980 90 fitted with 300tdi engine, with the rev counter set to 4 cylinder and wired correctly to the "w" terminal on the alternator the revs are wrong... ie it shows tickover at 6000 ish then when its reved up it goes of the scale its a little better in 8 cylinder mode but no where near right. do you think its buggered or just something i have done wrong!

Thanks, Chris

Av yer got the rite size pully on yer altinater?

Just a thought !
Personally i wunt o trusted em t sell me one if its reference signals from the alternator !
Get back in touch with em an if dunt gerran answer then ask em via there ebay shop !

it was rather cheep compared to smiths ones and VDO ones ie £15 so I will test it on another 300tdi and cut my losses and save for a better on I also got a boost gauge from them which is spot on!! Interesting thourght about the pully though will check but more or less sure it's correct!

Chris

edited for spelling!!
