Hi all, seems I joined here nigh on ten years ago, when I had less fat, more hair and dreams..... shame that guys gone, he was ok...

anyway, i'm back! and still hankering for my first landy.

Life has moved on since my first post, i've a family and all that jazz and i'm hoping landy ownership would be a step in the right direction of some weekend activities.

Hopefully you lot can steer me in the right direction of which one I should be focussing on.

Our main vehicle is a VW caravelle, it's great, does absolutely everything....except off road.

I'm looking for something I can live with daily - I work from home so not fussed about economy.
I do a quarterly trip to the office, 200 odd mile trip - would like to be comfy
I'm a boring git and would like some more interesting hobbies, ideally with my young lad, and thought greelaning would be fun, so something capable of some muddy fun would be good.

Does this put me in Disco country? I'm guessing Defender would be too off road focussed for my needs, range rover perhaps too road focussed for my needs? (happy to be wrong there as I do like a range rover)

awkwardly and perhaps not ideal for offroad but I do prefer an automatic - I had a hip replaced and it's just more comfortable

Would recommend a disco. Up to you either d1 or d2. If you want basic then d1 (less electrics and robust 200/300tdi engines which are easy to work on),
Or d2 if you want more refinement but at a cost with electrical gremlins (nice comfortable drive though in my opinion).
Both models have rust issues so look for one that has been sorted (unless you can do the work yourself of course).
90/110 defender are fine if you don't mind sacrificing a bit of comfort, more adaptable for your personal needs. I daily drove my 1988 90 (300tdi converted) for about 12 years (sold it due to growing family). Now have a D2 which is so much nicer to drive on the road.
Don't know anything about range rovers (apart from being expensive)
Hope this helps

Welcome back!

A disco 2 sounds like it would fit the bill nicely. Lots around. Just be mindful of rust on the rear chassis. Find one that has been looked after. There are lots to choose from.

welcome and, as much as i love my series 3, for your needs my recommendation would be - not a series land rover :)
