Disco 4 (LR4) Restricted performance

Hi all, anyone got a restricted performance on the dash before. Got diagnostic done and it says low turbo boost pressure. This warning has popped up about 4-5 times over the last year and just vanishes again either when it is switched off or even with driving. Mechanic said that he has similar issue with another lr4 last week and it ended up being crack in the inlet manifold. He said they are 2 inlet manifolds on the lr4, both are made of hard plastic and have been know to crack. Part of the conversation that scared me off is he said that to replace both sides they are £250 each and it is very labour intensive. Any one shade any light on this please??
 
I have no direct experoence, but have read about it several times, have seen 12 hrs labour quoted for both.
See if your local garage has a smoke tester machine, it makes smoke and they put the pipe into your inlet trunking and see where smoke is escaping from.
 
As above, you need to get the manifolds smoke tested, or just pay up to have them removed and checked for cracks.

£250 per manifold is peanuts compared to costs of other more serious issues that can crop up, like crankshaft failure.

Unfortunately you own a D4, which is probably in the top 10 of the most expensive vehicles to maintain. They're not the sort of vehicle that can be maintained on a shoestring, and can easily land you with a repair bill of many thousands of £,€,$.:eek:

Thanks guys, don’t like shoe string repairs myself. Also hate to throw money at parts unnecessarily in an attempt to resolve issues. Rather pay for investigations first. Got my fingers burnt few years back with a xc90 Volvo, be safer to tell you what I didn’t change in attempt to resolve a starting issues £££££. And this was with multiple dealers and supposed experts... once bitten and all of that

Weirdly quite a dew disco 3/4 forum members having deserted the D4 due to the crank issue have moved onto the xc90!
 
Weird - what the dreaded symptoms of the dreaded crank shank failure and also what’s the likelihood of it happening? Is it specific to an engine type, year, mileage ??? Sorry for my ignorance this issue

The engine stops, sometimes with a loud clanking noise, sometimes it runs on with just a quiet knock, until it finally gives up.

It was pretty common on the 2.7 D3, but it's becoming more common on the D4. :eek:

From the cranks I've seen (both 2.7 and 3.0), and the data I've looked at from both capacities, it seems more likely to fail before it's done 100k miles, and less common after that. There are plenty of D4s that are fine with over 100k on the clock, but also large numbers of D4s with broken cranks well under 100k too. I've done 2 engine changes on D3s with broken cranks, and decided I'd not do another.

I actually sold my own D3, because I couldn't live with a ticking time bomb at the time, and would be reluctant to buy a D4 for the same reason, especially as I don't need a 7 seat vehicle now.

I think the actual numbers are small, but crank failure is the worst fault an engine can have, as it results in an engine change. :eek:

Join the disco 3 forum, and search for crankshaft failure or engine failure!

The thing is the amount may be small (I suspect it is in fact larger than people realise) but on other makes of car it pretty much does not happen, yes there are the odd instances, and owner abuse will play a part in it somewhere, which is also relevant on the D4 especially as it has no dipstick!

Most other car froums are concerend about what tyres/what brake pads/what wiper blades/what led bulbs? whereas land rover forums are full of much more serious/expensive issues.
 
Welcome to the world of landrover :(..... out of the Volvo frying pan into the landrover fire lol... I have had my D4 for coming on 2 years now. Get it service every 8k and only issue I had was a couple of batteries and a new compressor so far. It has 118k on the clock now

I have had my D3 for 5.5 yrs now, and a few people have asked me are they good cars etc? I want to say yes as I really like mine, but I cannot bring myself to potentially financially break someone!
