After doing everything else to my Landy and whilst going to the mot station for the fourth time my indicators decided to stop working once I had got there.

I then began to investigate and after removing the dash discovered lots of cables that had melted, 50 amp fuses from the 70's and cables with no covering connected and spliced to everything as well as relay connectors shorted with paper clips.

How this thing hasn't caught fire in its life I don't know and how anyone thought there work was decent I will never know. So at this point I bring myself to doing a full re wire and sorting it out.

My question has anyone done a re-wire and updated fuse boxes holders etc

I am looking at replacing the fuse relay with this item

Modular Fuse and Relay System: Polevolt Ltd

Or this one

Fuse and Relay box assembly information

If anyone can shed light on their work experiences. My plans are to be able to use newer mini blade fuses and mini relays etc and install the raptor dash at the same time. I will also be able to have a separate section for the efi bits and bobs!

I converted mine to the later 300tdi (I think) blade fuses. Have also removed any previous mods and most of the surplus wires. Then added an additional loom for a fan and heated seats. If the harness is beyond repair consider buying an new one, but it would have to be pretty sh@gged to do that. I've also fitted a raptor dash.

To be perefectly honest, if it is as bad as you say then just go for a new harness / sub-harness. Means everything will be back to standard and should you have any issues in the future then you will be faulting against a known colour code. You can then add accessories knowing that the basic structure is ok.
Re-wire yourself if you are happy you know what you are doing regards cable sizing, colour coding, making decent connections, cable routing etc but by the time you have bought all the stuff to do it correctly it would be cheaper & easier to start with an off the shelf solution. Do it on the cheap and you could easily end up with an even bigger mess than you already have.

They had blade fuses since 1990, get a second hand fuse box and a new loom or good second hand loom and tart it up.
