Back in 1996 I fitted new door tops to my 1966 S2A, fast forward to yesterday when I started poking around under the glued on carpet it transpired that both NS and OS are little more than rust! As I peeled away the carped the entire steel lower frame came away with it :(

I could just fit some more OEM tops or go for the later style military ones, I believe these are all aluminium construction and will last that much longer. However some of those I've seen forsale (SH) make a point of saying 'no frame cracks'..... which makes me think, are these aluminium door tops worth it, or do they suffer their own list or issues?

Thanks Guys,
Alastair

Hi Alastair,
I've got an aluminium one and a steel one on Betty.
The aluminium does not have any problems, whereas the steel one has surface rust. Might sound not too bad, but the steel one is about two (2!) months old. The old one was less door top, more rust and holes. On the motorway it was like a sheet of paper, I even taped it to the hardtop before I entered the motorway. Sounds bad. It was. And the one was less than five years old. AFAIK the aluminium one came off a very early defender.
Take aluminium and see not to use any steel parts which come in contact with the aluminium.
If you find aluminium door tops cheap, please let me know. I need one...

Cheers

Hi, the quality of the replacement door tops is now very poor and even the glass is rough, i have fitted several this year and i believe i could peel one open and fold it flat onto the door with no great effort.
how much are the dear aluminium ones?

Rocky Mountain Spares UK > Improved Engineered Parts and Accessories for your Land Rover
£265.00 for a pair
and needing only one is no good either
forr 300 quid you could buy a ****ty motor with alumionium door tops if you have the space, time, and right mood.

Edit:
Have found the one I have, it's the wolf door top, mil spec.
See http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=33190
Part No MWC4746 and MWC4746
Havent found them for less than 160 quid, but they're better than the rocky mountain ones having a front sliding piece

Cheers
