Hi All,

I think the CV joint on the Wife's TD4 has gone as she said it knocks when turning corners. In an attempt to avert another costly garage bill I was planning on doing the job myself. I have the required axle stands and other tools, but I just wanted to ask whether I will need any special tools as part of the removal and fitting?

The other question I have is whether I actually remove the drive shift fully to fit a new joint?

In the past when I replaced one on a car many years ago I just replaced the whole shaft with a new one from a breakers yard.

Thanks

The new cv joint should come with the circlip and possibly a new gaiter & clip. If it's the outer joint that has gone, you can replace it without pulling the shaft from the gearbox/diff and thereby losing oil. You will of course have to disconnect the ball joint etc. to enable the hub to be swung clear, also remove the ABS sensor. get someone to apply the brakes whilst you slacken off the large hub nut to the CV joint (the tight one ).smear the splines and the circlip with copper grease before fitting the replacement.

Thanks for your reply. If I am correct, the ball joint requires a special splitter tool?

Thanks

I just did some searching on the net and can see a brand new whole drive shaft for the same price as my local motor factors want to charge me for the CV joint.

What's the catch here as a whole shaft for £54.99 inc 2 year warranty seems a bit too good to be true?

If its a td4 I would only recommend oem drive shafts as I and may others have had issues with aftermarket ones causing bad wobble. If you need the inner cv you can't normally busy them separate from the shaft! I don't really know why as easy to change...

Also be careful as the hub but will be extremely and I mean extremely tight!

Have used J & R a number of times including one for a TD4 with no problems, apart from the hub nut on the TD4, the one supplied was larger across the flats and we could not get clearance through the hole on the wheel to tighten back up. So you may need to buy a new hub nut separately only a few pounds.

Nearly all after market hub nuts are larger across the flats and can't be tightened with wheel in place.......not a major prob but hey ho you get what you pay for.
Jr stuff is ok I have used them several times
