Hi all

I am going to treat the old girl to a new rad ( she is overheating and the rad leaks like sive to)

Question is how hard and how do you change a rad
Does the whole front end have to come off ??
Does the rad carrier have to be removed ??

Any advise would be gratfully recieved.

Many thanks chris

well with the front off its a frikkin snap.

With the front on.. It's a bit hard to get at the side bolts.. but only by land rover standards. ..
well doable. Only thing You need remove (besides the somewhere round a dozen bolts on the radiator) are the hoses and the fan shroud tin. And the grille... to get at the back sides of the bolts.

Ooh.. with the front on.. you'll probably have to take off the fan shroud plastic to clear the fan. Lot of bolts and screws.. but its simple enough
A little harder than some just for the sheer quantity of bolts.

It was a pain the first time as the fixings were seized, but I replaced all of the nuts and bolts with stainless steel, so it's easy now.
Just the hoses, fan shroud tin. The plastic shroud can stay on when removing the rad, it clears the fan, if you move the fan blades as you remove the rad.

Is a pretty easy job. If there's someone around to help lower the new rad in & line it up it helps. I've done it on me tod, but it is a bit of a fiddle. Remember the rad bolts to the unnerside of the top lip/flange. It looks like it should bolt on top, so you bolt it there cuz yer cun't remember which way round it fits & the side bolts dunt line up...............yeah, yeah I did it wunce!

We did it last week in ours last week, Easier than the disco's i tell you! Just mind you dont run the new rad down the metal fan like i did pulling the old one out, snuffs it royaly!

When you say flush the system are we talking run a hose through the engine for say 10 mins or is there cleaners that can be used ??

A hose should be good enough, usually the water is red muddy looking, to make it easier the thermostat or by pass hose will have to be removed, More work though
