Replacement of series 3 diesel fuel injection

I have recently purchased series 3 1983 model L rover fittred with 2300 cc diesel engine. I have a feeling ( not fully analysed) that it is very heavy on fuel and the fuel goes unburnt. I am suspecting the fuel injection pump. Would be possible to replace it with any japaneese make?

Thanks. Which Mazda engine is recommended? Will it fit directly on the existing mounting? What about the gear box? will the existing match the mazda engine?
