Hi All,
I have just purchased a 1972 Series 3, that has had an engine swap to a 2.5L Daihatsu Diesel at some point in it's life. I am having some problems with it starting, namely the engine turns over and it does not roar into life, also the fuel pump keeps clicking. This lead me to think theres a lack of fuel pressure, and perhaps a fualty fuel gauge reading 1/4 tank when empty.
So, I put more fuel in, and still the same problem. Any suggestions for next steps? Do i replace the fuel pump?

Also, after a long run, it has been ****ing oil from the rear axle... so much so that the back of the car has a thin glaze. Is this a common problem?

Welcome :) first.

The slight sheen is called automatic protection, If you ever had a motorcycle do you remember "scot oilers" for your chain;).

As it has been somewhat converted then you really have to work through the system from the tank to the injectors to maybe find the issue, its a conversion and there is no knowing what has been done by PO, When was it last given a good service.
Did you buy it like this?

don't start throwing money/parts at it on guesswork, throw the money at tools to test/work on things it will save money in the long run;)

Also a rough location may help others give advice.
Good luck with it.

I managed to fix the starting issue, it turns out there was air in the fuel system and I just needed to prime it. This has happened twice however.
Regarding the oil leak, it seems to be fairly minor unless after a long journey, I will try and fix with my new tools.

Im based in Oxford, UK.
