Greetings, I have just bought a Freelander 1 with only one ignition key. I've surfed until I'm fed up and can't find anyone local to me other than dealers. (I live in Bedale, North Yorks).
Spoke with dealers in nearby Ripon, they quote about £140+vat.
Anyone know of any cheaper alternatives please:confused:

Try teasdale landrovers (Staindrop) and there is an Independant guy in Tow law (paul) both in Co durham. Both are quite helpfull if thats of any help

If you want a really cheap option... Get some keys cut at the local key cut shop for a couple of quid then stick the proper key with the immobiliser inside the steering column housing (cut the key bit off for extra security if you want). Obviously you lose the immobiliser security, is that worth £140?

 Isnt the transponder inside the remote control that opperates the doors, therefore you couldnt leave the key part inside steering column

I had a replacement key and fob for my TD4 two years ago and it was about £80 from main dealer.
As key is coded it has to be cut by BMW in germany, mine took about 3 weeks, but the fob was same day.
Sounds like they were trying to over charge

bought freelander 1 w reg with one key, had spare cut at local shoe shop 3 pound 50 pence. sorted.

It won't start the car though. If the key doesn't have a transponder inside. If you try your new key out then make sure the original is nowhere near by.

Cheers

No way round it i tried untill i went blue,in the end it cost 137.00 pounds and thats the cheapest.Good luck

ive just got a spare key to replace one a had broke top off for a 54 plate free lander off ebay from keys-n-cases, well worth looking them up. as long as you can get the chip out off old key, they send you a blank key you put chip in it go get it cut and your away, the whole thing cost me £9.74 i ask someone the week before how much it would cost me and was told £80 so im very chuffed i got it sorted for that price

After weeks of useless dealings with the Landrover main dealers at a cost of about £150 for a keys which were unfit for purpose I finally found that my local locksmith in Dewsbury was able to supply a key and code its transponder to the car, an eight year old Freelander, for £50.

Hi Peter. Do you have the name of the locksmith? Thanks!

You're probably all aware of this by now but Timpsons [shoe repairers] will clone your original transponder and cut a matching key for £50 in about 15 minutes. When I bought mine it had two "blippers" but only one key, so I was paranoid until I got a second key. This info is of no use whatever to the poor sod stuck in Sweden [as you need an original to copy both the key and the transponder from] but it's a much cheaper alternative to LR direct for anyone who wants to act before their personal crisis hits.
