Replace or just repair these bits of inner arch?

I've never really welded before, but bought myself a mig today from a mate. I want to start thinking about getting to work on the bits of tin worm after I've had some practice. As a starter I want to sort out the inner arches at the front. i pulled some of the plastic arch liner trim clips and away came the metal as well as the plastic. I've attached a picture to show the rusty bits on the arch and also the hole near the battery tray.

As a novice, I'm just seeking some opinions on whether it would be easier to just replace the part with a YRM panel where it's all cut and formed to the right size? ...or chop the rust out and patch, bearing in mind it's not a huge area. I had the wing off and apart from these annoying little holes it's all pretty solid still.

I don't want to bite off more than I can chew especially with this weather!

I'm guessing its 1.2 to 1.5mm thick steel if I'm going to patch?

I'm sure they guys here who have done big jobs will be able to advise you better than I, but it dones not look to bad I would patch it, but it might be worth cleaning off the rust 1st to see how bad it is.

Hi SpaceDawg, I'm hoping to get as much of the rust off, next time there's a break in the rain! Got soaked yesterday :) As it's my daily drive and MOT'd til July, I don't want to have it sat in bits for a long time, but want to do a half decent job once I've had a bit of practice.

I've enjoyed reading your blog by the way.

Ah ok well there 3 more going posts up soon one of which is the full repair to Larry who was a lot worse that your rust, so I think that should be easily manageable.

The one thing I did learn when I did mine is don't weld in crappy weather if you can manage it, I was getting perfect welds in the shelter but out in the open in December it was a nightmare, when I finished my neighbour walked up and said "if your stuck you can use my barn" that was literally 10 minutes after I finished the last weld. Also get some decent clamps and a piece of copper for seam welding it makes life a lot easier.

What mig you got?

I got a Clarke turbo weld 155t, which has the gas conversion. It's a few years old now, but I've seen it working, and it should do for me as a beginner. Only cost £50 and it came with a few tips, wire and some other bits. Just need some gas, mask, gloves, metal etc. and some sun !!:)

what do you mean by this? i`m always looking to improve my basic welding skills.

You clamp the copper behind the section you are welding and it acts as a heat sink. Will help reduce warpage and blow throughs due to over penetration or heat.

First clear off as much surface rust as you can. I would say anything showing sings of pitting in the metal it's time to gut it out back to fresh clean metal then weld in new section from there.
The front wings are easy to replicate or if your feeling lazy or no yup to it there's the yrm repair sections available.

As spacedawg said there is a lot of threads on the go including my own one.
