removing waxoyl

Morning all,

My disco has a larger hole than it should in the top of the rear wheel arch - directly below the pillar. (Pulled out the rubber bung which is there and now it's too small to put back!!)

Anyway, I carried out a sort of Heath Robinson temporary fix to prevent water going up there and into my boot. Bascially stuck a piece of stiff plastic over the hole and sprayed waxoyl over the top. Possibly not the best way I admit.

It needs a a new bit of metal welded up there now, and a mate of a mate who's handy with a welder will do it. However, having ripped off the plastic I'm still left with Waxoyl all around it.

Does anyone know how to remove Waxoyl, other than continual scraping?

You're going to have to take a grinder to it in order to prepare the metal for welding so I shouldn't think much waxoyl will survive that. Any that's left close to the weld will get burnt off too probably setting fire to your motor in the process(only joking).

the catching fire bit was the bit than concerned me actually... can hardened waxoyl catch fire?

Waxoyl is a great rust proofer but causes problems when welding as the heat from the welding process melts the waxoyl and it runs into the weld making it fail

Try to remove it as best you can from any area above the new weld line, I would use a heat gun to melt it then scrape it off but you could try white spirit as this can be added to waxoyl to thin it for spraying so it may works to soften it to allow wiping off.

Someone suggested a steam cleaner - would that work?

gentle heat ( from a heat gun) and scraping. then remove the residue with steel wool soaked in white spirit or diesel.
