I think my streering wheel must have been adjusted at some point as now with a straight steering bar my wheel is out. How do i adjust it? I took the cover off the wheel and undid the big nut but it still wouldnt budge?

ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Sign of posible clocking!Hope not for your sake mate.

More likely to be crap tracking and balancing at some point. I took my Golf GTi to have all 4wheels tracked and balanced. I went in with a perfectly aligned steering wheel and came out with it about 15deg off centre.

The YTS who had done the job said "it was like that when it came in" I won't tell you what I said but when the manager came out of his office to see what all the screaming was. He flipped as well when the YTS told him the same thing. They're supposed to centre the steering wheel and then set the tracking. But if they don't do it properly and the wheel moves they never reset the steering wheel and redo it.

If you can't get the wheel off. And you do sometimes need a steering wheel removal tool. Disconnect the steering column inside the engine bay and adjust it there. But I'd take it to a decent tyre place and have the tracking checked first.

Dont think its been clocked to be honest. It was straighter on the old banana steering bar but with a straight one its off.

Should the wheel come off with the big nut removed? We tryed with some force but it didnt budge.

Thay are a bugger to get off If you've fitted a new steering bar then chances are you've thrown the tracking out. Disconnect the steering bar and line the steering wheel up, then make sure your road wheels are straight and adjust the steering bar and reconnect it to the vehicle. And then take it and have the tracking done as It's almost impossible to do it properly by eye. unless your very experienced.

dunno? is it? im off climbing in Snowdon this weekend and my landy is STILL on axle stands :( but i got someone to do the welding next weekend now :) all thats left is brakes and steering box :D

We had a new 90 once that never had the steerin wheell fitted straight.
As it was so irritatin, I got em to put it right on the first service.

I have removed really stuck ones before like this:
Nut slackend a bit so as its still plenty on by all its threads.

apply upward pressure to the wheel whilst tapping the nut squarely with anammer.
It can be dun on yer own using ya knees for the uplift, stick sum wood under ya feet if ya a short arse.
Or get sum other skin to do the pullin or tappin.
Remember to hit the nut nice and square, or ya could end up with bolloxed thread.
Once off, just alter buy a few teeth in the rite direction.

hope it woks for ya.

you can make the removal tool with a couple of nuts and bolts and a bit of wood or metal but i bought one on ebay for about £10

What you must NEVER EVER do is slacken the nut a shade, rebend the lock tabs and take it for a drive along a bumpy track..
It is very dangerous and you should't even think about it.

Forget removing the wheel - having done tis twice now, there is a much easier way. Remove the nut from the draglink balljoint end by the wheel, loosen th clamp, and then twiddle the balljoint in or out of the end. Sorted. The hammer trick shouldnt be done ever, the bumpy track idea is better. Using the hamster on the end of an old steering column will almost certainly weaken its collapse points that are there incase u crash it - and it stands a high chance of breaking while u r driving. It even says on the steering wheel to to use a hammer, and thats coming from land rover! I made my own steering wheel removal tool also once, used a piece of 1/4 in steel plate, which bent the 2 smaller bolts to the point of stretching and breaking them, and the steering wheel didnt even move. So i did the balljoin thing. Much easier!
