Most of them unless made after about 2005. In which case they would have both.

ok, how would you stand if you ran LPG and removed the petrol tank? you would have no need for cats, correct?

i stand corrected checked paperwork this morning and it only applies to a full cat test ie petrols

you would be fine, as you wouldn't need an MoT since the car wouldn't start. No need for road tax or insurance either

I saw exhausts for sale at billing with fake cats in the pipe work

There is no part of the MOT test at the moment that can determine emissions on a diesel engine, gas particle or otherwise. There is only a smoke density check. The part about "Check for the presence of a catalytic converter if one was fitted as standard". Only appears in the petrol full cat test routine. It is NOT mentioned in the diesel test routine as a reason for refusal. So as far as the MOT is concerned there is no reason to fail a diesel if the cat has been removed. However it is illegal to remove it under construction and use regulations. I think that is the regulation referred to in the DFT answer.
