hello all

On my 1995 disco 300tdi the dash SRS light flickers - can I assume the SRS/airbag system has a fault and is thus non working?

So, prefering the non airbag dash and steering wheel, is it a simple job to remove and replace the said items?

Steering wheel swap will be simple. But will the new horn fitment work?

Would the passenger side airbag come out and be replaced by a hand grip and a rubber mat? Or does a whole new dash need to be fitted? (you might need to look at airbag and non airbag discos to know what the hell i'm on about)

You might say wtf why bother? But i'm sick of carrying round a load of crock that don't work, i.e ABS, SRS and Air Con.

thanks all
jake

I could be wrong, and I am happy for some pods taking if I am, but don't the new MOT regulations say, if it was factory fitted, it has to be present and working?

I'll be off to get my tin hat now.

I've just done a bit of research via google and it seems it should be no problem removing the airbags.
There may be a hole in dash from the airbag fitment on the passenger side, but a grab handle will fit in just fine.

I'll pick up some parts and let you know how it goes.

I have crashed two D1s with airbags now and they have not , thankfully , gone off....but whilst I appreciate the lack of facial burns it does beg the question - are they any bloody use ? I think I have only ever seen 2 D1s in scrappers with deployed airbags ....50% effective ? Rather small test group though

"Are they any bloody use ?" Hopefully they are in a crash.

I still have a car without them fitted, it also can be said the same about seat belts, one of my other cars has them at the front but doesn't have them fitted for the rear seat passengers.. not that I have rear passengers.

I've owned cars without air bags and seat belts and like all 'classic car' owners never thought it was a problem.
I remember when a collapsiable steering wheel was a selling point ... that's schoolboy days:D

Hi if you are taking the airbags out you need to change the whole dash as the airbag in the passenger side has a big hole and the grab rail doesnt cover it up i have done this on my old discovery also you have to be careful with the disc with the wires behind the steering wheel but i do agree with you the grab rail looks so much better and no stupid lights etc to annoy you, good luck with it all

How BIG is this 'big hole' you talk of ? Would gaffer tape do it? I like a good bodge.
Or are we talking massive?

yeah gaffer tape will do it i cant remember exactly how big it was but the good old gaffer tape bodge will sort it lol

You could disconnect the wire to the SRS light and splice it with the oil light - so it will come on when the engine starts and go off at the right time - bit harder to hide the 'Air bag fault' message for those of us with a P38 but again I'm sure a carefully placed strip of black tape could also remedy this message :)

Pretty certain I read that they only have a life of 10 years so whether they will work or not in an 18 year old landy is a bit of a gamble.

My srs lamp has never worked, don't know if the bags would deploy, can't be tested really. I treat her as a classic car without bags, mot guy has never mentioned it.

It may just be a loose connection or a blown fuse, the ecu is hidden below the cubby box, do you have a front passenger air bag fitted or only the steering wheel bag?.

Just been readng your threads about the SRS and if it can be removed.
One thing I have learnt is that I think mine only has the steering wheel bag as on the passanger side there is the grab handle present, same as on my last disco 1 which had no SRS. I should have kept it but it was a 5 door and I wanted a 3 door.
If I only have the wheel bag am I right in thinking that its just a matter for whipping off the wheel with the airbag and replacing it with another non airbag wheel and take out the yellow box (ECU) (or as I call it electrical clutter unit) under the cuddy box.....Oh! and change the dash pod for one with no SRS light in the rev counter unit................If its that simple I'll get it done soon as I just hate this modern technology. I've just bought this latest disco and only when I got the bloody thing home did I realise that there was the SRS light on the dash.....It does seem to be working properly but for how long is the question, knowing my luck it will pack up the day of the MOT of just blow up in my face for no reason....I just hate the unnecessary things that make this life difficult,

i'm having similar issues, do you know how to locate this wire?
