Removing Radius arms ??

I recently learnt the hard way that the radius arms locate the axle so if you take them off.... you have big problems. :doh: So now i really need to take them off how do i do it safley without a car landing on my head do i need to secure the axle fist or will just putting it on a flat surface and letting the springs ect do the job be ok ?? many thanks.

Get a pair of axle stands under the chassis legs to take the weight off of the front wheels. Stick a trolly jack under the diff just holding it up, not taking too much weight and then undo the radius arms.

That's how I did it when I changed my axle.

Is that really neccessary? The arms just keep the axle straight, they dont really hold anything up. can you not just drop them off without jacking up?

serious question as i have my bushes to do soon

Well the radius arms are what keep the dampers in line. If you put the weight of the car on the axle with no radius arms it will move forwards or backwards. When I snapped my radius arm mount, it bent my damper.

Forgot to say that I took my prop shaft off as well. I didn't want to risk damaging it by bending it at too much of an angle.

You don't want the car resting on the axle without the radius arms on.

Did mine recently in a car park, without a jack, without even looking at a jack, never thought about using a jack, did I mention you don't need a jack, no jack needed.

It's a good idea to undo the bottom nut on the shock absorbers and lift the shock out of its fixing point, because the axle does want to move and will try and bend these...

Why the **** would the axle want to move?

You're not tryiong to drive it with the radius arms removed are you?

when i have done it in the past i have just removed the radius arm, right enough i remove them one at a time. The only time i used a jack was to get the arm squeezed back on to the bracket and a podger to line up the holes.

The bushes were a bugger to remove, burnt hacksaw, big hammer, air hammer/chisel the were well stuck when i change over to polybushes.

Dont know if i would fancey taking the two off at the same time, But i have had to make new brackets for them and weld them on in the past . Did it one at a time
