Removing old adhesive (Series bulkhead)

I've got a lot of cream coloured old adhesive on the centre bulkhead of my S2A, in front of the gear stick. I expect it used to have carpet or other insulation stuck on it once upon a time. I've tried scraping it off as is to no good effect. Any tips for getting the stuff of? I'd rather not paint over it as the original paint is there waiting to be revealed again..

White spirit should work, many of these glues are petrolum based but wiping a load of petrol around is recipie for disaster.

Tar & glue remover.
Test on an inconspicuous area first.

I use Clutch & brake cleaner to remove residual adhesive after taking off caravan decals & the sealant used on awning rails etc.
To date never had an issue with the paint & was put onto this by the engineers at a caravan company I do bodywork for. Again, test on an inconspicuous area

It’s more than likely contact adhesive. There are solvents available specifically for these.

Have used a product Proclean5000 it is used by Police workshops for removing adhesive residue once stickers are taken off vehicles before going to auction
